Oh and more bad news, can't tax the car as I've no v5. Phoned dvla who said its still registered to Gav. Anything up to 4 weeks for a new v5, can't use the old new keeper supplement as you only get 2 months to tax it with that. Great.

It's dated June do cant fudge it. Can use it at dvla office but thats in Glasgow and I've no time to get there now..

Just tax it online and get the disc posted? At least it'll be taxed, it's a fine for not displaying but I've never been fined and I'm skilled at losing mine

Yeah TBH i didnt even do that. Id bought a gar from a bloke who didnt have the V5, just the green slip hed got from the previous owner years ago. The bloke I bought it from had written his details on it so i just tipexed over them and put my own in. Sent it off, no covering letter and got the new V5 back.

Scott is right might make it look better, might also make them pay attention and think is tip ex actually allowed though.

Realistic post; If you've lost the love then in all honesty breaking it and moving on is probably right on the cards, I know how you feel, to a degree, after having the bora done over. It just makes you want rid and do something different. This car's been through so many stages now and I'm sure you've achieved 90% of what you wanted to if not more since owning it. And like you say there's a shit ton of cash to be made splitting it - people will be all over the wheels/turbo/arches/bonnet etc.

Since having the mx5 iv certainly lost love in general modifying of cars, it's so much hassle now with the law in terms of tyre stretch, lows, exhaust noise etc and as much as its a bit of a mature thing to say, its a generally a waste of money. Not a waste in the sense that it's something you enjoy but for what you get out of it you lose so much time effort and money.

Keep it, it's awesome and you owe it to yourself to see this one through, you've put so much time and effort into it, and breaking it would be just throwing a lot of that time away.

We all feel shit about our cars from time to time, and it sucks. But it's just the way it is.

Can you just put keep the tuning abit more modest for reliability? Even with "just" your average stage 2 tune the XUD's shift along nicely enough. It'd seem a shame to break it TBH.

Nah a stage 2 XUD is never going to be on the cards. I've driven it now with so must BOOSTZ it spins up in 4th given half a chance, and reek pours out the side of the car in a very armageddon-esque way. Could never go back to a "stage 2" now.

Dan? Just no. I know what you're saying though, I got bored of the GTI not because I was bored of the car, but because it got to the stage there were that many things niggling at me that I cut my losses and moved on.

The money from breaking it has paid for the majority of the estate, so it doesn't owe me THAT much. But it's like when you break a limb, years down the line you know you've broken it and it takes a lot to get past the mentality of "it's going to break again".

Thinking about it, I don't think any rods have made a bid for freedom. The engine still ran, it still seemed to make an amount of boost too. Oil is f*cking everywhere so at the minute i'm wondering if maybe i've got my oil setup wrong or something, if an oil line has popped, maybe the return got kinked and i didn't realise and pressure has blown the hose off. It lost about 4-5L of oil in the space of 10 seconds, which is quicker than you could get it out of the bottle tbh. But when the turbo shat itself it emptied the oil just as quickly into the intercooler and that was at low rpm, this was at about 3.5-4krpm so i'm surprised there was any left at all.

The inlet is clear, so the compressor side of the turbo is still good. The exhaust side however, I don't know. There's oil in the exhaust and inside the rear bumper. Smoke was coming from everywhere, engine bay, under car and I assume exhaust as well. There's every chance i've bricked another turbo and this one isn't as apparent.

If it's the turbo, the car can sit until the weather's a bit warmer and i'll decide what to do from there, hate to say it but a bolt on TD04 looks very appealing at this moment in time, maybe the GT2056S just isn't a good fit? It was hitting 30+psi, maybe they really don't like that kind of boost? If it's an oil line, i'll spend the extra dollah, get a proper return made up with no expense spared and go again.

It's not so much the poor reliability that's annoying me though, it's all the other fixes that it needs. I need to redo the interior as some of the suede is pulling off. I need to sort the washers out as they're leaking and fluid doesn't stay in the tank for long. It's slghtly higher on one side than the other at the back. I need to get a proper exhaust made up, not my homebrew lashup. I need to redo the front bumper, and a new rear bumper. The paint on the roof is, to be honest, pretty shit.

That's just a small list and after spending so long last year racing to get it ready for FCS, blowing the HG and then fighting ever since for what feels like no real gain.. I dunno, i can't repeat that next year. I had money to burn this year, next year with the new home I don't. Not only that, i've spent more than 50% of my days off this last 8 months working on the car. I need to get out more.

And tax? Gav has moved house, so any tax disc will be sent to his old house, where he left no forwarding address. So for that to work i'd have to tax it, get him to check at his old house for any mail after a couple of weeks, then get him to post it up to me. It's going to be easier to just get my V62 sent away asking for a new V5c and tax it myself.

To top it off i've just had a call from the hospital, specialists have looked at xrays of my knee and decided they need to get me back in to take a proper look and an MR scan as they may need to operate to remove a piece of bone. Got to say this has been the worst couple of weeks i've had in a long time.

We'll see. Don't hold your breath though.

tbh i can see why he might want to break it. I loved my old 1.8 but after 3 engine rebuilds, i really was loosing the patience and love with it and just didnt want to see the thing. Wasnt nice breaking it and ripping apart all the hard work i had put into it but it was nice to start a fresh with the gti.

Right been over to the inlaws' house to actually get it off the road and on their drive. Can't tax it as already mentioned so its off the road until I get my V5c which will be January, plenty of time to mull it over.

It starts and runs, checked the oil and it just about registers on the dipstick but on a hill, figured it would be enough for now and drove it up the drive. No issues there.

Had a look underneath and oil's dripping just above the PAS ram and down the subframe, which confirms my suspicions regarding either turbo or oil line failure, the fact oil's in the exhaust is telling me a seal's probably gone on the hotside, the inlet's clean. If it IS the turbo, i'll buy another one one day, but given that I can't drive it anyway for a good few weeks i'm in no rush to get out under the motor in the cold. There's no oil on the top of the turbo, it's all on the return hose underneath. It COULD be that the return was too restrictive and pressure has built up in the turbo, don't know yet though and no point speculating.

When it goes back on the road i'm turning the boost down. Remember I was having actuator issues using the T2 one so next time i'll be going all out with the Kinugawa actuator and getting it set for 30psi max, and turning the fuel slightly. Think a contributing factor was the boost spiking, I saw the gauge hit way over 30psi a couple of times on the run and there was no smoke on boost. I had fuel turned right up on the T2 but was an old fuel filter, got much more smoke when I replaced the filter and cleaned the pickup, so I think it's overfuelled for the application, spiked the boost and maybe whatever else.

Still, on this more extensive test run, i KNOW the turbo's epic,roads were a bit damp so not a good indication but the thing screams, an estimated 30-70 pulling onto the motorway (on a slightly uphill sliproad) just before it went pop was about 6-7seconds, two up with my tool bag and a quarter tank. Pulled at silly boost all the way through 3rd, only went pop when I matted it in 4th.

And i've decided that 1st and 2nd gear are now irrelevant. Just end up going sideways lmao

Spot anything missing? lmao Thankfully it's blown sideways out the win pipe so won't be killing anyone's tyres on the motorway, it'll be lodged somewhere in the hedge at the side of the slip road. Note to self: Fit an actuator next time and DO NOT run a GT dewastegated with as much fuel as it can swallow. 24psi will do me next time!

On to bigger and better things though. The search has begun for my third GT, found a few but need one in the same fitment or the £20 or so I save by getting a more common one will soon be made up in making adapter plates and re-doing the exhaust elbow which I really cba with. So watch this space, but hoping to have one sorted out soon. Hopefully the V5 will get here quick sharp too so I can tax the f*cking thing.

Whilst i'm waiting though i've spent the last of my Xmas money on some stuff, wonder who can guess what they're for?
