Type R's really do sound epic when screaming. I remember when I had my 1.1 106 and my mate overtook me on a motorway sliproad, felt a right twat with my barryboy straight through exhaust vs his screamer

Typical Honda engine, needs to be absolutely annihilated to go anywhere fast, make a god awful noise most of the time apart from on full throttle at 9000rpm, naff all torque... Depends what you're into I suppose...

a 6 will keep neck and neck. the reason why it kept up with your mates scooby in the bends is because scoobys really dont handle as well as scooby owners will tell you. IMO anyway!

He has a good point but I'll always be a lover of them! Just like waiting for a turbo to spool really. And as said torque isn't a lot my cousions got a 169 bhp b16 but 128 ft"lb

No torque and thirsty as hell if you drive them on cam, also look horrible imo. Dread to think what the insurance is like.
That said they're very reliable, sound awesome and there's a massive after-market scene, so pretty easy to tune.

If I had the chance I would have an ek9 over a 306, I said it :/

They are great on track I have no doubt, but like any engine with a higher cam profile or 'lift' they are very tiresome to drive on the road. My Celica was marginally slower than an EP3 (but infinitely better looking :p ) yet it was incredibly difficult keeping pace with things like a 182 Clio and even one of those Merc Kompressor coupe things, purely cos it had no torque. It only became really fast by the time you were in 4th, by which point you were in 3 figures and it walked most things, but who can do those speeds regularly?

Could always slap a turbo on there. Seem to be able to turbo justabout anything Honda made in the 80s/90s and early 00s.

This is very true, there is a thread on PistonHeads of a project Honda Accord 2.2 lump with a massive turbo strapped on it. Goes like stink by all accounts, 600bhp at last count iirc!

Always fancied one when I was younger, now the only older one I would consider would be a minty ek9 or the import EG thing (SiR?).

Yep! Good ones are going for over 5k! Regarded as the best handling hot hatch ever by many though. Even the EK VTis/Jordans do good money now, wanted a Jordan before I got my first GTi6.

This convo has been had so many times.
My mate has a EP civic and cant get away from my 6 but i cant get away from him. But for a 202bhp car that cant get away from a 167bhp car thats twice its age its pretty fecking poor

It depends on the conditions and the drivers, you cant really compare like that. Top gear test track with the stig would be the only way to tell haha!
