crappy news about the gasket mate after all the hard work
have you sorted a gasket and bolts yet?

cwspellowe Wrote:Absolutely HAVE To make it to FCS... Yes you do..... HAVE to get it there, would be a total shame if it not there!

As long as the head hasn't been tragically overheated, it should be fine...
Have a look between the valve seats, is it badly cracked there - or is it just the normal slight precup cracking? Get a steel rule and put it across the head, see if it's warped, I bet you it won't be TOO bad as long as it hasn't been driven with it boiling over.

Had a straight edge on the space between the cylinders. Head is ever so slightly warped so threw on a thicker gasket. Had to buy a torque wrench too money money.
Engines almost completely assembled now, have to bypass the heater matrix for now as the gti ones dont fit properly. Should be ready to fire up again tomorrow, just hope I dont get a repeat of the same problem, only thing it could be then is a badly warped head but as I said, if it'l last a month til I get paid I'll be happy. Can anyone confirm my suspicions about the head gasket being away? It wasn't actually split but there were scorch marks between the cylinders, could this have allowed exhaust gases to pressurise the coolant when cranked?
03-06-2012, 08:19 PM
Your thoughts look correct to me, it looks like the gasket has failed in both places mentioned mate, I have everything crossed for you, first start today or tomorrow then?
03-06-2012, 08:25 PM
Tomorrow mate, less pressure now as Gav's just dropped off the log book for me. Means I can tax it in my own time
Early finishes all week so will be straight home and to work on the engine. Pretty nervous about starting it again, really hope it's fixed the problem...

cwspellowe Wrote:Tomorrow mate, less pressure now as Gav's just dropped off the log book for me. Just make sure it has coolant in this time and block the heater matrix hoses for now don't just join them! My engine will be in and running by end of play tonight or tomorrow depending on how things go and I am shitting it also when it comes to starting it so we can be scared together
03-06-2012, 09:49 PM
im shitting myself too. the amount of work and time weve both put into this car and its down to this. it would be devastating if it didnt make it.
03-06-2012, 09:59 PM
Well I hope it all goes to plan and massive props for the effort that you have both put into it to get this far, I want to see it in the flesh!
Plus we are planning on having a 2 car convoy to FCS so it will be pretty shit if either of us don't make it TBH
03-06-2012, 10:12 PM
Is it technically still a convoy with one car?
Xav i owe you for your help mate. Think the next few road trips are on me!

Well... That's the engine built. And sounds from turning it over like theres definitely more compression.
Now to charge that battery so we can try it out for real...
04-06-2012, 07:25 PM
Fingers crossed for you buddy...
Disclaimer: The above is not to be taken to heart and is probably a joke, grow up you big girl.

Yeah found out during conversation that Gav was running peak 35+ psi, no wonder it had gone eventually!
Good news. It's fixed. Bad news, must have put the timing out as it fires, just, then races for a second then dies. Relatively easy fix though having just fixed the hg on a bank holiday weekend
04-06-2012, 09:10 PM
Good to hear mate, will be keeping my fingers crossed for you
04-06-2012, 10:35 PM
Good luck mate! This HAS to make it!! I've been wanting to see this since you started the build!!!

Right, before anyone gets TOO excited.. I'm not happy about how we bled it. It slowly got up to temp up until it reached about 85 then started getting hotter much quicker. Fluid level in header tank stayed pretty steady, never really got a big glug from the thermostat opening and the header tank overflowed a couple of times. There was still air in the system, could feel it in the top hose. Temp got up to about 96 and then we switched off.
Having trouble bleeding it all as now there's no matrix the rad bleed point is the highest in the system. Need to get the front end way up in the air tbh. Think the header tank overflowing was just because we used pure water for now, must have been boiling as it got up to temp. Really wish there was an xud specialist nearby who could have a look over..

using coke bottle method for bleeding?

Yep, orange moustache method first then coke bottle with engine running.
Think the problem is that I'm struggling to get a bleed point at the top of the system now I'm not using the heater matrix
05-06-2012, 07:33 PM
Pressure bleed it, blow into the overflow tube with your hand over the resevoir cap and get somebody to open the bleed points, this is how i always bleed 306s now.
