3 Wheel Bolts
#1
Ok just got my nimrods/ouragans (not sure which, came of a 406 estate) on and one of the bolt holes in my fron hub has finally let go, nothing left. I knew it was on the way and Ive got a pair of hubs with new bearings waiting to go on.

My question, how long can I safely drive like this, Ive got the MOT on monday so can change them over at the weekend as I need the car for college all week. I was thinking just re torque up the 3 that are on it every night.

Any input welcome, thanks

3 will be fine. I wouldnt even worry about it, although you could check them every journey just to be on the safe side.

I would stick to slow speeds and gentle in the corners just in case, that's a lot of pressure on the weak side of the wheel Confused

Cheers for the replies, 3 it is then but Ill just drive it steady to be safe, just a PITA as I didn't really want to be changing hubs at the moment as Ive got no space, all jobs are being done on the side of a busy road.

have driven 30 miles on 2 studs before,

3 studs is plenty, would happily drive permanently with 3 studs on a 4 stud hub!

Quite surprised at the responses in this thread to be honest... Although it should be fine for short journeys etc, definitely get it changed as soon as you can. Yes some cars do come with more bolts than others. But for instance povo Saxos etc obviously have the triangular stud pattern to spread the load. Plus the fact they have top speed of about 23. With a 4 stud with one missing, one side of the wheel is affectively unsupported, for lack of a better word. It may, therefore, be more inclined to loosen the other 3.

All I'm saying is, really, although it will most likely be okay for a short period... err on the side of caution

Again agree with curt. I ran 3 bolts on my old hdi, hit a pot hole caused one of the bolts to snap, it was one next to the missing one, an with 14 miles to get home it was horrible, every minute stopping and tightening them up. Nearly lost the lot.

So not worth running for a long time, it's not safe and it's just luck if you manage to run them for a while, so get that Hub changed ASAP!

3 is fine as far as safety goes IMO but consider the fact that each wheel hole needs a bolt/nut to pass an MOT for it to be deemed road worthy technically you could get points for it, as it is a defect that PC plod could make to seem worse than it is

Don't forget that the wheel is balanced!!! A wheel bolt weighs a lot so running without one effects it a lot

When I balance wheels I don't use bolts just chock the center cap hole on the machine and away I go.. doubt the weight of a bolt will have any effect

no you don't balance them with the bolts, obviously, what he is saying is that the wheel is balanced, the bolts are the same, one bolt missing will throw the rotating assembly out of balance as there is a good amount of weight missing due to the missing bolt from one hole!

I drove down to cornwall on 2 wheelbolts, both on same side too, and ruan was belting it around quite abit. We're stupid, but it held.

I had a Renault Megane with just 3 studs holding the wheel on no problems what so ever will be fine just make sure the others are tightend with a torque wrench there will be no probs then
