Leaving just the skins, also most of the dash was removed too, with a little piece for the clocks. so an idea there for you and even fit a racing tank too. also get hold of fiberglass panels too and thin the car loom out as much as you can!

there is a guy on 306gti OC doing fibreglass door skins, bonnets, wings and boots

I'll update this tonight with a few pictures chaps.

Plexi windows and tailgate saves a good 20-30kg all in.
Single skin as many panels as you can, just leave the lock/catch mechanisms in place. Fibreglass bonnet can save about 15-20kg, single skin with a couple of catches to hold it down. Fibreglass is almost as light as carbon and nowhere near the price. Same for the wings and bootlid, fibreglass the lot and look at up to 50kg weight saving. Presumably you've stripped off the likes of the PAS? Good few kg's there Lightweight pulleys and flywheel, another 10kg Depends how hardcore you're going, realistically you could get the car way down at 900kg.

Finally update time!!
Underseal takes a LOT of removing, we spent hours and hours at it, with fire and angle grinders and chisels and drills and wire brushes and fingernails While we were at it, we've seam welded everything and fixed a lot of holes that had appeared, using the bonnet for patches. We (jonny) also managed to set it on fire. Twice. Anyway, after rolling it over a couple of times to make life easier for welding etc., we started thinking about fitting the cage, so sat the shell back on spare tyres and wrestled the cage into position. Cue pratting around with a seat and a steering wheel We then removed the cage after marking the position of the mounts, then moved the shell to Jonny's as the shed hasn't taken kindly to the winter and the bare metal where we'd removed the underseal was starting to rust quite fast! The problem was, we'd sold the flatbed trailer as it was too small and we needed the money. So borrowed an even smaller one Moving completed, with some help from Samass, we got the foot mounts welded in place and test fitted the cage, before turning the shell over again for one last go at the underseal/rust. Then, last weekend, Poodle came to help and we (Carl eventually showed up at 4PM, slacker ) got the whole underside pretty much ready for painting, welded the massive hole in the arch up, and found some more bits in the boot floor that needed welding. Hopefully we'll be on track to get the underseal on next week, assuming all goes well with the rest of the preparation. The updates should get more frequent from now on in, less messing about with rust and more fitting of shinies and boosty stuff. A few more pictures will follow, just gotta go and take them
while considering seam welder...have a gander a the front subframe...theres a lot of potential for stiffening on that!!!!
good progress though chaps!! Are going for fibreglass skins on all doors/bonnet/boot...even roof?? Wishes for more power...
27-08-2013, 08:38 PM
Ah, the subframe will be bolted on afterwards though, haven't looked at that yet
Fiberglass bonnet, single skin boot and doors, metal wings and roof. For the time being at least Welding and fabrication projects undertaken, contact me for more information.

fibreglass boot? plastic windows too?
yeah check out the subframe. get a good sanding disc on the grinder, clean it up. It will shock you that it managed to do what it does. SO bad. Wishes for more power...
27-08-2013, 09:37 PM
Plastic windows will be fitted straight away, as for the fiberglass panels, we'll have to wait. Single skin doors and boot don't weigh all that much anyway

Can't beleive I missed this one! Well done chaps, look forward to more updates

Yeah, check that shiny-ass underside!
28-08-2013, 09:39 AM
quite interested in how light the shell is on its own. looks like it only took a few of you to move it.
an epic build here. good work.
28-08-2013, 10:22 AM
The shell must be sub 250kgs. 2 people can just about lift it.

28-08-2013, 12:58 PM
are you not going to weld up any unused holes?
28-08-2013, 03:25 PM
Yeah, all of them!
Welding and fabrication projects undertaken, contact me for more information.
28-08-2013, 04:33 PM
Nooo! Welding is adding weight! Lol
28-08-2013, 04:39 PM
it'll be light enough, don't worry

So tonight has involved reinforcement of the sills with some box section. Yeah, it adds weight but tbh the sills are pretty rotten and this will also mean we can jack the car anywhere along the side. They'll also add a fair bit of rigidity, right between the feet of the cage.
And that's just tacked in place, there's going to be a weld all the way along both accessible sides.
28-08-2013, 09:13 PM
Overheated the welder though First time so far, hope I didn't cook it!
