RHF5 IHI Turbo ** Updated with pictures can someone help asap!**
#1
I have a RHF5 IHI Turbo lying here, its off a 3.1TD Isuzu trooper jeep. Ages ago a 306 manifold was put onto it and i just came across it again. Im wondering is it worthwhile looking into again? as in would it work lol. Any help welcomed..

Edit** Picture of turbo in question..

There's the compressor map fella, looks a bit on the small side to me?

Also the VJ11 i can see implies it's from a 2.0 Ford Probe.

Massively inefficient at anything over 20psi or so so wouldn't be ideal for big boost, and the flow rate isn't amazing either

Ahh so that's not the one in the picture? Wink

Also that's an RHF5 not an RHB5..

Looking at that compressor map, it looks very similar to a td04 13g tbh. A 13g starts its efficiency at about 125-150cfm, and holds on until around 250ish, which again is very similar to that turbo - give it a whirl Big Grin looks like it can hold its pressure quite well too, 35psi ftw!!

Nuh-uh Dave, the turbo's only 60% efficient at 28psi (PR=3) and 240cfm

Wouldn't like to run that at chronic boost tbh, wouldn't see much gain flow-wise over much lower psi

Sorry RHF5 i meant lol.. so you think its not worthwhile putting on or making it work?

Yeh but the turbo efficiency drop of 15% would definitely be outweighed by the volumetric efficiencies gained through running an extra 8psi at the manifold Big Grin hence why in reality, as soon as you bump up the boost, you make more power because these heads are certainly far from perfect and the extra boost at higher rpm's easily outweighs the losses in compressor efficiency, but yeh 35psi probably a little much Wink but 28 psi is definitely doable as a daily :p

If this is jonnies old one I compared side by side with a few and it defo looked a good bet and near as bolt on as you can get Id stick it on and see rather than dithering over maps.

Yup, a lot of people don't bother with water cooling as the oil cooling should be sufficient. Think it's the TD04's have water cooling jackets on them?

Well i got the kkk out the other day and took the exhaust elbow off it (as i needed it for the trooper turbo anyway) and a chewed up, well part of a propellor fell out lol.

Anyway i found out i needed a flange made for the end of the low pressure line, so wasnt so bad everything else seems to be bolting straight on!

One last question would be do i need to cover up the water line holes? Or will they be grand open? I dont plan on running water lines to it as when i get the turbo back i just want to get it on to fook and fire her up.

Don't worry about the water holes, will be good left open Smile

Cheers mate. I had to weld the wastegate closed just as i couldnt get the actuator on at all! :/ dont think its the right one.

Just worrying cause i just have the standard tmic on. But my mate has a scania turbo in his and it goes at 2 bar no problem..

Will update either this thread or my cars thread whenever i get it on and if all works out hopefully get it put on a rolling road to see what its doing..
