They're meant to be free as free to turn by hand. It's very common for them to seize up. You'll struggle to overheat a hdi unless sat in traffic for an age at which point turn the car off. I'd buy two aftermarket slimline fans and use the wiring from the old ones. Makes life so much easier and you're not replacing them with used old parts. It's what I've always done and I've not had an issue yet. Plus they're cheap on eBay and fast delivery.
