So was giving the gti some today then as I reached around 4k rpm I could heard a horrible grinding vibrating noise coming from the front at first I thought it was the arch liner catching on the wheel but that was fine I was thinking could be the top engine mount as its coming from that area but I'm not to sure.

does it do it when the car is stationary? or just moving?

Only does it over 4k revs because I was thinking engine mount but they seem
fine.

Ok, if it's just rev related not load etc, i'd look at the belt tensioners / idler pulleys first, see if there's any play in any of the bearings, also takeoff the cam cover and see if you can see anything loose,
