Just wondering.. How well do 6's respond to a remap or are they fairly well tuned from the factory? Where can the biggest gains be had (other than boost etc.) for the lowest amount

IMO theres no good tuning for a GTi6 thatll cost you less than what the car is worth.

If you get cams youll need a remap and TBH the cost of a remap for the GTi6 ecu is approaching the cost of a low end stand alone ECU which will be far better to map (and youll be able to tinker with the map yourself)

You can get a full ITB and ECU kit for under £2k but you wont see alot of change.

Cams, ITBs, stand alone ECU and a little bit of mapping = £2500

Better to spend your money on adding lightness, shiny suspension, better pads and good tryes.

Ouch.. that'll only take it just over 200bhp though..

It'd be better to spend a grand on the HDi to get a big vnt and decent clutch and fuel pump.

That's the thing with NA petrol tuning... without adding boost it's hard to get significant gains without spending big money. In fact, even minimal gains require significant money... which is one of the areas where they differ hugely from the HDi tuning you're used to...

I don't think they'll be anything to gain from a remap on a standard lump, only with cams etc. But then unless you go for the mildest of cams, you have to take into account that the pistons may need work (especially if the head has been skimmed) as the tolerances are so tight.

Plus, because you haven't got the wave of torque you get from a diesel (especially as an NA petrol remap with cams will probably move the power higher and reduce torque) you've got to take into account economy will be worse...

^^ you can get away with lairy enough cams to get abour 200hp with everything else stock...

The standard inlet is bloody good tbh; hence you don't generate a huge amount by 'bodying, and imo its totally not worth the outlay, except for the porno noise lol!

If you're willing to do a bit yourself; you can make a charger conversion for a lot less than lynx's one, and that'll do 250-260hp easy...

But yes, ultimately yo'll struggle to get significant gains n/a for a lot of money spent. BUT you can do lots to the handling on a budget!

Its the only thing that makes sense... The money you save on not buying a 6 and insuring it and running costs ect... could go towards stage 3

Yeah it does tbh and at least i'll still be able to get fairly good fuel economy whilst cranking up the power still..

Think i'm going to need a conversation with TB at some point..

But the question is, do you sacrifice reliability? Plus you will get bored at some point, what about resale value? Smile

But the more people that go for bigger power, the more reliable it will become for everyone and the only way progress is made

As long as the emps aren't stupidly high and its not insanely high torque reliability shouldn't be an issue anyway. If I do it I want to do it once and do it properly, vnt would be cool but requires too much work IMO so I'll be looking at a normal turbo, something like a gt2052s, I've seen tf035's which look like they could possibly fit straight away but I have no idea how they flow so I'd need to check out the compressor maps for it

I agree with Scott, as I'm actually in a similar situation myself and have been trying for weeks not to start a thread about it lol. lol

You've gotta work out whether its worth modding the car you have, losing the resale, possibly breaking other things (clutch etc) and keeping a car that you're always wishing was different.

OR spending more money to start with on purchasing a car you prefer, then doing the mods on that, but knowing you'll probably prefer that one for longer I'm the future so it won't matter so much about the resale value.

It is a catch 22 really....there's several pros and Cons for both.

Its personal preference, yes a perv has more power to start with, but theres much more room for improvement with a derv

How so? I think theres more room for improvement in a 6.
90 bhp to 220bhp ish from a derv. Maybe more but in a 6 they can go from 167 to 560 ish
But yeah personal preference
