Toms306s Project - Fodge!
Toms306 Wrote:You didn't misread it lol...I just didn't didn't update properly.

I assumed the insurance wouldn't be epically high if I used it as a second car or insured just for a month...........but monthly insurance only applies to people over 21, and the normal insurance was epically high, like 5 times as much as I insured the NAD for. Confusedhock:

So atm I have no idea of the plan. Wish I had just left it standard now....fed up of f*cking up tbh. Meh...
just revert it back to standard tom,

Will probably have to just to sell it.

Annoying though, as I've basically got the car where I wanted it now. And a lot of the, stuff can't be put back to standard aanyway. Still supposed to be RRing it soon...might just trailer it there lol.

If you do sell it, they are going for very strong money right now, that's why I got a 1.8T Wink

Yeah I know they are, pita tbh as I was gonna try and px it with a standard 150 instead lol.

Not sure if anyones gonna buy it with mods though, as the engine is basically a finished project, ideal for someone that wants a quick diesel but is better at exterior mods.....

I'd consider it if I didn't know the DMF was f*cked and I didn't want a '6 lol

Couldn't be much more expensive tbh. Tongue

To be fair, it isn't that bad on a run, I did Leeds - Bridlington and back on Saturday on about 25 quid, and that's 60 miles of motorway and then 80-90 miles of twisty A-road. I get that to high 30's with a fair bit of ragging which isn't bad, it just doesn't really have the fun factor that a 306 does, yes it's very fast but it's a bit... Meh.

Lol, I was just winding you up anyway, I know they're not bad for how quick they are. Smile

Sooooo been looking through, eBay/at/gumtree etc at diesel manuals with a budget of 2k....and can't find anything I like! gonna have to physically look around I think. Oh and 306s are out, there aren't any locally....except q couple of estates at 2000 lol :? lol

Once I get back off holiday, I'm gonna sort the last few things on the Octavia and then get it up for sale I reckon, look for a nice '6 or maybe a phase 1 DT, I fancy building something with gunmetal Speedlines and a frankenpump Big Grin

Well after this mess, I won't be building anything else lol, costs too fecking much to insure! :problem:

Boringly standard now I think....

Sooooooooooo....thought I'd better update this lol.

After the turbo hassle it all ended well and works fine.....albeit a bit laggier than before.

The noise/vibration that I assumed to be a failing DMF has also dissapeared....maybe this was the turbo?? :?

And it will be getting RR'd next Thursday.... So we'll find out exactly how much power it has, or rather 'hasn't' got. Tongue

Now, I'm not sure what to do next. Seeing as it's not actually broken.....I could keep it. However insurance is the main issue atm. Its temp insured atm......I'm not sure whether to swap it onto the nad policy and try and insure the nad as a second car. BUT Elephant won't allow me any intercooler modifictaion, so I'd have to swap my nice big one for a standard 1.8turbo one (due to the new piping, 130tdi one would be a pita to refit).

Now it turnos out I've spent nearly a grand on mods and service parts for this car.....I know, I couldn't belivev the calculator when I worked it out so had to use the old fashoined method and it came out the same! Confusedhock:

I wish I hadn't spent that much, but I know I won't get that back from selling the golf so I'm thinking I should keep it.....even though insurance will be ra*e (well I'm expecting about £400 extra on top of the NAD policy, then like £400 to insure the NAD as second car too as I use both cars every day atm).

Then of course on the other hand, I'm going to try and get a job at my local garage as I'm almost done with college........meaning no commuting milage......so i could buy a nice petrol again instead.

I don't really know what to do. Sad I'm not looking for answers or opinions on this btw (as I know they'd all be 'buy a 306' which really isn't the most financially sensible option), just stating where I am with the project. Smile

Also...heres an 'odd one out' pic at the resi at the EA meet as project threads get boring without pics (thanks wingnutz for the pic lol).

Lol, I don't think anything would make me feel better about how much I've wasted. I know over £500 of that went into the turbo/oil pipes/gaskets/2nd oil and filter change though. :|

how about 500 quid on an engine that turned out to be f*cked, a converted engine loom that was 50 quid that had a major electrical fault. over 100 quid spent on parts to convert the 1.4 16v engine that was in it to mpi ( inlet, ecu, engine loom) that i didnt even need to do! people telling me to mpi the car 1st as it makes it easier to vvc. which was a load of shite as i only used two fuckin hoses that was already on the car! laugh is i could have made them up if needed be too.
then a another 570 quid for replacment engine and another converted loom.

tbh tom, be very careful with what you read on car fourms about conversions and tuning.
this is why i wont wind my Hdi up until i saw, test drove a wound up one and spoke to the owner on what he did with his setup. which is a working car.
from my engine conversion experince from the rover, i would buy a donor car just for its engine rather than buy the engine. that way i can hear it running and know what the crack is too.
even this engine i wont give it beans in case this one starts to clatter like the HDI which my old engine did.
but a modded car you built and got it running is well worth it! its your spec and to your likeing! you can have a right old laugh with it too!
i think the Sleeper route would be you Wink
Reply
Thanks given by:
Well I suppose it is a one-off now, there are none on dubgen or mkiv's with exactly the same spec (although many similar).

I just think the money should've been spent in a better way I guess, ah well, it's done now so gotta forget about it and keep moving forwards. Smile

Mine is a bit of a sleeper I guess....most people assume its a 115/130 from the lettering on the back and it looks standard from outside.....but clearly it isn't when I put my foot down lol. I'm not a fan the 'proper' sleeper thing where people make thier car look worse than standard though...thats not my cuppa at all.
Reply
Thanks given by:
one of them things isnt it, i can say the same too. my HDi could be a sleeper 160 bhp.
why not badge it up as a lower specd model as you stated?
i learned the badge doenst matter on the metro as i still get shite anyway. i think you would love a little pocket rocket like the rover. build that nad into a 1.6 16v gti. my mate said that my rover reminded him of his vts as it was just as vicious if not more!

Hmm...I don't want a 'viscious' car though!

What I like about the golf is its nice for different things....ie - fast driving, cruising, stop/start traffic, slow B road driving etc....but with something small and snappy its really only good for one thing which is driving quickly, although it does that one thing much better than the golf, I wouldn't like to be doing slow traffic or 60mph cruising in something like that.

tbh tom my rover behaves like my HDI around town etc maybe like a remapped one to fare. thats with keeping the car off vvc, driving around a B road or a twisty road can be fun. wind it up onto vvc and you will raise hell! straight roads you can practically take off lol
i have set the car up to be practical like the HDi but can move when i want it to.
one big rule to follow with a small car that is highly strung is not to be cocky and drive it with respect.
it wont think twice about killing you on that next corner.
i let my mate drive my rover metro last year, he asked can he put his foot down. i told him yeah. he decided to let vvc the car up the box. it scared him as he didnt expect the car to pick up the pase very quickly. he didnt do that again in a hurry on the way back lol he said fuckin hell its planning on wanting to kill you!
he loved tho but soon realised you cannot go daft with it.

Well that's sort of what I'm. getting at.....but I mean things like cruise control and a hydralic clutch make for better cruising and traffic driving. And it has things line esp and abs which mean the chances of it throwing you off the next corner are a lot less than in the metric or the 106. It's not just the engine, its all the extra bits around it that make the difference with the golf and I think that's what a lot if people on here don't realise.....

yeah having the toys is great fun, having a car that is basic with out those toys is a laugh. look at the classic minis.
just got adapt your driving to the car.
but like i say it depends on how you set a car up with out those toys.
things i need to change on the rover brake pad and disc wise. also i may fit dampers to the front or all round.

If you do like everything numbed to a point where you feel safe, then that's fine...

I personally cannot stand having it all coated in fur to make it feel like it's very solid behind what you feel, I prefer to feel exactly what's going on... When at the end of the day, if you go into a corner too hot, you're still going to get terminal understeer off the road... How much depends on the road state and your tyres...

However, a good cruising car is very much like that, to get the feeling of wafting on the motorway, you have to numb the whole car...

Wouldn't you rather hit a corner too fast, shit your pants, BUT then remember the ESP just saved your car and next years insurance premium....... It isn't there for someone to drive like a cock, but when you do get it slightly wrong it seems to work well, thats gotta be better than a bit more road feel surely? And again with ABS, wouldn't you rather you could still steer in an emergency braking situation rather than writing off your pride and joy into a wall when the wheels lock......

I agree the steerings weird in the golf, but I wouldn't say the steering in the NAD is 'better' either. I'm driving both daily atm and going between them definitely makes for some good situations on the road. The golf's light steering doesn't give you confidence to push through corners at speed....but if you ignore that confidence and push through anyway the golf does hold them surprisingly well (bearing in mind I have decent tyres and gti suspension, 1.4/1.6s are probably shit lol). Keeps up with my mates XS through the twisty's too.......obviously on the straights he doesn't stand a chance haha. Tongue But in the NAD you're always fighting the steering, the rack has far too many turns and every bump or catseye takes the wheels with it. Yes I can feel absoluetly everything through the steering wheel (including bird shit on the road  ) but it doesn't make driving any nicer, if anything it's worse IMO.

However, some other 'numb' cars I hate driving. My mums fabia for a start...it has electro-mechanical PAS which is awful, that along with the massive sidewalled skinny tyres makes it horrible to drive quick or corner at any speed lol. Plus the boatlike suspension where it actaully feels as if theres waves in the road.....hit a bump and it's still bouncing half a mile later. The golf's comfy cos it just flattens out bumps with its enourmous weight....but it doesn't 'bounce' anything like the fabia does lol. And as for the i10......well thats just awful....the suspension seems to be very wallowy and unsporty, yet every bump kills your spine...probably due to the chairs being made of old church pews I think...they really are that uncomfortable. My mum doesn't like driving it either....bear in mind she drives the fabia every day........she said she won't even do 60 in the i10 on the country roads as it doesn't feel at all safe round corners......I suppose thats it's high centre of gravity though.

So yeah, the golf is 'numb' compared to some old cars...........but I prefer driving something like that that these properly numb 'new' cars! Smile

Want to, its much cheaper and easier to lower a golf than a 306 due to proper suspension instead of a torsion beam lol..... but it would be like 100 quid more insurance! Sad so its not gonna happen. Sad
