Black Ph1 D-Turbo project (black betty)
#1
I have never got round to doing a project thread for my car on this forum. So finally here it is;

I bought a black ph1 d turbo off a mate in 2009, who after buying a new car had it on his drive for a year in bits.
I only paid £260 for it but it needed work, lots of it!

So this is what it looked like then, half a body kit,m3 mirrors, sun strip etc etc.

Work on the car has been slow as i'm not a mechanic and it's my daily driver, so i rarely get time to put it up and do major work.
Anyway so far since I bought it i have done a lot of work to it. there's still a lot needs doing but here's where i'm up to. It had done 96,000 miles when i got it.

Engines on 130,000 (just), regular servicing, replaced the rad, water pipes, glow plugs, gearbox, clutch (twice), all steering components near enough, cam belt, water pump, brakes are standard front and its and rear is lowered 60mm on gti disk beam, new battery, ph1 front bumper, cyclones, de-wipered, s16 blue flek leather interior, new engine mounts, technix coil overs and loads more.

Standard internals on the block, had a bosch conversion and it's been tuned and gov mod'd. KKK K14 turbo turned up quite high on actuator, boosting 21 psi. Induction kit, and fmic with de-cat straight through to a standard back box.

Some recent-ish photos;

I recently went to my boot to find this in the back panel,

Also 2 years ago a woman in an X5 reversed into the ns quarter panel and did this nasty mangled dent. Luckily it came out really well,

The garage that fixed it also did a scratch on the bumper and a key scratch down the side of the drivers door for free Smile. The only problem was they had painted the whole panel and section of drivers door a different shade to the rest of the car. I didn't notice until i saw it in sunlight, which brings me to future plans.

Plans are;
full respray in original black within 1 year
paint cyclones white with black pug lions
refurb front bumper
tidy stide strips/spoiler etc.
tidy rust in the boot (from having no arches in the past)
change rear bumper
tidy fmic piping route
complete engine clean
do something with the head lights
back box to finish exhaust
new turbo (when the kkk gives up the ghost)

Some more progress shots,

My ground LDA pin arrived today so that will be on soon along with some gti skirts i've just finish painting.

Any comment appreciated steve

Few more photos here, a few things have changed sine these photos. ill take some new ones soon,

Really like the look of this, very different. Some reason I love that bumper, think it would only work on a black ph1 though lol

Cheers fella, i had issues with that bumper. originally had it resprayed and fitted 4 new fogs and it did look good with the angel eyes. I just didn't like the fit so i took it all off. What it looked like:

After a year of searching, i found a ph1 d turbo bumper in good condition so that's on now. I'm going to respray it in a few weeks.

Here's a few more pics i found

S16 interior, wind deflectors and front bumper,

so that's where i'm up to Smile

Yea mate. Just a shame the bodyworks a bit tatty for now. Bet you can't wait to get yours on the road!

Can't wait to be able to strip the engine and scrub everything and re-route the fmic like your doing.
Might start riding my bike to work and put it up to strip while the weathers nice Wink.

Yeah I can't wait to have it back on the road. It's taking me a lot of time though but I hope it will be worth it.

How did you find the angel eyes at night?

Terrible! That's why they're off.really yellow and half the normal road coverage. I might put them back on if I can get a hid kit for them but don't know which to buy.
Also beams were all over the show for the mot so went back to standard!

Dusk was the only time they looked sick, on half beam.

So I swapped the Bumpers today so I can refurb the d turbo one. Straightened the intercooler up with a DIY bracket and had the idea of putting the air filter through behind the grill to see what it did, and there seems to be a bit less lag.

Proper botch job though till I source some piping and a new filter but it fits above the intercooler Smile.

Progress this week, got some bright number plate lights for the rear, ordered new headlights and indicators.

Also had to get some genuine pug fogs as the £40 eBay ones where not fully oem and didn't look right. That was quite annoying!

Bumpers now ready for lacquering!

I sprayed my wind deflectors with some old light tinting spray but doesn't really have the right look so might order team heko ones...

A bit of a thread revival here as its been 3 years since i've updated this!! I'm still here and still own the xud.

So due to moving house a few times, changing jobs and now just buying a house, not much time and money was left to put into the car. Over the last few years I have been slowly working on the d turbo but I felt it wasn't enough to keep the thread going. However now i'm right back into this and have some new plans for it and more time to get things moving again.

Here's roughly whats been going on in the last year or so...

From my last post the car has had a new clutch and I found rust in the rear arches due to no liners courtesy of a previous owner which I will be addressing in the future.

[Image: 13680694_10153775708631765_7540891977226...e=581BE250]

[Image: 13892094_10153775708621765_2555166461504...e=58122407]

I also had bad top mounts so i've replaced these and fit the coilovers at the same time.

[Image: 13902571_10153775708616765_3346788026853...e=581780B4]

Other work I have done is strip the interior and cleaned everything. The floor carpets came out and had a good rug doctoring and I sprayed the roof lining black with fabric spray. However this still needs attention.

[Image: 13887091_10153775708791765_2910308557093...e=582ED083]

[Image: 13892229_10153775708756765_7160437983897...e=581DC70B]

The quarter panel window seals had shrunk and cracked over time, allowing water in when it rained and causing the carpets to get wet so as i had the carpets out i made sure they were going to stay clean and dry by replacing the seals;

[Image: 13880188_10153775708816765_4280689050473...e=5823BEF9]

[Image: 13882671_10153775708946765_1471627820114...e=5828D42E]

I also fitted the side skirts which now need respraying again.

[Image: 13912844_10153775709041765_8682811644386...e=585E2BD8]

At this point we moved into our current house and knowing there were more major jobs that needed doing i took the car off the road.
These jobs included cleaning the engine and engine bay, fitting some kind of turbo upgrade, fixing oil leaks, a new rad and intercooler etc. I also started to have an increasingly serious problem with the door looms. The doors would pop the lock open when using the central locking and need to be locked manually. Annoying at first but then the doors started locking... themselves... while the keys were in the car and the engine was running. luckily I had the window open at the time but this is when i decided to get another car and start doing some proper restoration on the car.

[Image: 13921103_10153775709056765_4234364905932...e=581D1436]

[Image: 13895253_10153775709081765_6747103136111...e=582369BA]

So as the car was going off the road, i needed replacements. One being an astor HDI I bought for £400 off a mate pretty much standard except a sports backbox. Which I persuaded the missus to have and sell her 206 for. More recently a 1995 sedan xud for £100 with 138,000 on the clock with yes, a bosche fitted.

[Image: 13900196_10153775709271765_2131417698270...e=5811FB4A]

[Image: 13880188_10153775709336765_4846596936434...e=5815B9C6]

Now I can start posting where i'm up to with the restoration on the d-turbo and hopefully progress will be more frequent than it has been  Smile

Onto recent work and future plans.

The car went up on axle stands and I have been working on stripping the engine out. One thing has led to another and I have now decided if something needs replacing, fixing, painting, cleaning etc it was to be done.

A few photos of the car being stripped. The engine is out with 90% of the bay stripped to reveal 20 years of dirt and rust!

[Image: 13775378_10153775709891765_7437310841494...e=582B6CD0]

All steering and suspension removed as everything is going back on either new or cleaned and painted. wishbones have seen better days so will be replacing those along with drop links, arb, tie rods and track rod ends, better coilovers etc.

[Image: 13872670_10153775710091765_8085335450456...e=581C7B0D]

Brake calipers were not great so they have had a good clean with wire wheels and a paint. I will also either refurb them or upgrade to bigger brakes of a gti or similar.

I've also started work on the engine bay. Obviously there were areas of rust but nothing that required welding so I cleaned these areas up and gave the bay a paint with hammerite satin black. I will also be using some bilt hamber products to treat the under side, wheel arches and other areas that need attention. The aim is to prevent rust from causing issues further down the line. Of course with the age of these cars now rust is getting more of an issue and i keep finding more areas that will need further attention in the future.

[Image: 13876364_10153775711041765_4682203162025...e=58597891]

So this is where I am currently up to. I have the arb to paint, more work on restoring the wheel arches and sill etc. I will be cleaning, painting and protecting any areas i can really.

There is no rush to get the car back on the road but I would like to take it to fcs next year so that's the plan. Things to do in the near future are finish the bay and clean the engine, replacing any parts/electrics that need doing. Sorting out a turbo, probably a gt2052 or similar. New radiator, intercooler, pipes, conduit, steering and suspension, cam belt and water pump. The list goes on but basically if i'm not happy with something it is getting fixed or replaced.

I am also working on other bits. Door looms need replacing if i can find genuine ones for cheap enough. Decisions on headlights, whether it be masked standard lights, morrettes which I am refurbing or projector headlights. New fog lights, refurbished rear beam, new fuel cap release cable, clutch cable, gear linkages and many other jobs.

Sorry for the huge updates but that's what happens being out of the loop for years on end.

I would appreciate any advice people have in putting the car back together. I have been reading other restoration threads for inspiration as I would hate to miss something or not replace it to find it really should have been done while the engine was out. Things you may have come across or ideas I might be interested in using.

More progress as it happens.

Thanks for looking.

Great to see an update on this and that the car is still living. The phase 1s are certainly dying out and definitely not to many black d turbo's out there.

It's like watching back over my project thread lol. Keep up the good work, i'll be keeping an eye on this thread Smile

Looks like your doing a great job with it. It'll be awesome to drive once you've replaced all suspension bushes etc. I noticed you said you'd either refurb your brakes or upgrade to gti, I'd really recommend upgrading the gti brakes are 10X better. I'd change master cylinder for gti one as well

It is a megane one yes, but made a hash of the radiator having it fitted so wont be going back on.

Thought i'd do the 'yearly' update on this project...

So the car has sat for the best part of a year without much attention as i've been too busy with other things.

However i've pulled my finger out over the last month or two and things are moving again. I have found myself doing more and more restoring and this is now near on a full restoration project. Every time i get to something, im not happy with it so it comes out to get cleaned/painted.

Engine is now stripped and semi clean, as is everything else.

The bay needs a bit off attention but isn't looking too bad. Ive stripped, cleaned and checked the whole loom then re-taped it all back together as that was pretty grubby.

Glad to see you're still sticking at it with this mate, the dturbos as getting pretty rare now. Especially phase 1 and black. Anything special happening with the engine/turbo?

Too much time and money spent to give it up really.

Turbo has taken a backseat for the moment, i want to get the car clean and all the issues fixed first, when i have the money i will be upgrading internals and sorting a turbo upgrade out. Probably be looking at next year as i want to respray the car first.

Progress this week, the engine is clean and getting painted, then everything that came off has been cleaned and or painted before reassembling it. Its looking 100 times better than the state it was in when it came out.

Gearbox is finished and i should have the lump back together this or next week.
