Hmmm!

I'm still finding damage from the curb incident at pugfest!

Just a heads up!
with the Quaife LSD fitted it is very hard to detect a wheel bearing gone as you cannot spin the wheel freely the same as an open diff

i had to remove the drive shaft from the hub befor i could feal the roughness of this one by hand,
the car did get more noisy  around corners and had more vibration though the floor though

this hub was refurbed and fitted with new bearings April 2014 and was OK when i fitted the LSD before Pugfest

I have exchanged it out for another hub ATM while I referb another pair of hubs

since the engine has been built installed and run in i have now done 4500 miles
this has been broken down as......

sept 2015 installed new engine,
500miles run-in on shit mineral oil,
oil changed to 5w40 fully synth castrol edge,
February trackday Castle combe,
June Trackday Llandow,
june FCS 2hrs session,
july Pugfest,

a few good hoon's around the countryside

so in all  im really happy that an engine i built in my shed has done me proud!

I have a trackday booked at cadwell park on the 12th sept so i thought it was about time for oil filters to be changed
as i will be driving there and back from Devon

so todays job was just that oil filters and a check over and a quick spin around the block!
new oil and the car  sounds sweet

things to do for sunday leaving for cadwell day
sort tools
sort spares
sort tyres
fuel cans
load it all

Smile

Cadwell park Trackday 12th September

we had planned to make this a three day trip
Day 1 travel up
Day 2 trackday
Day 3 Travel home

Day 1.
First part of our trip was to cleethorpes just outside Grimsby,
M5->M42->A42->M1->M18->M180->A180->A16.

320 miles used 38 ltrs of fuel to return 38MPG in the 6.

good going i thought doing around 75mph all the way,
we had no traffic hold ups and only made one stop on route.

found our Premier Inn new home for two nights
booked breakfast for next morning then went for a stroll along the seafront,
Funny accents you northern lot, and gravy with everything what's that all about!
found a Hungry horse pub for some tea
wouldn't go there again!
back to the Premier inn
in the car park was this beast all 5Ltrs of it

Day Two

Up early for breakfast at 6:30 crap food left most of it
wife demolished her helping.
left hotel around 7:10
signing on was due to start at 7:30
punched the postcode into the sat nav Cadwell was 30 mins away, at-least the car will be warm for the noise test Smile

arrived at Cadwell about 8:10, found the other members from the gti6 forum that were going,
two Nicely turned out Bianca Rallyes and an Eton charged blaze 6, later on a 5 306 turned up looked to be a fully tricked out track car in a lime green.

change from my road wheels to my track tyres
some nice newish R888's

went and did noise test 92db @ 5K hmm my cars getting louder but all was fine as the limit was 105db

parked up and went to sign on which turned straight into the drivers briefing
same info as most other places with the same questions from the drivers
time for sighting laps behind coarse car!

wrist band for signing in
wrist band for drivers brief
sticker for car for noise test
signed sticker for sighting laps

from the sighting laps i could see this was going to be an epic day, this was not a flat circuit it had up hills, down hills, s's, and bloody hairpins,
nothing like I've been to before
coombe is flat with some bends
Llandow is flat with some bends

Cadwell is well, you can see why its nicknamed mini-Nurburgring

the other guys went out so i tagged along hoping to follow some lines but they had been here before and my Balls wern't that big yet!
so did a few laps at my pace to get to know the sequence of corners then came in to check tyres and fluids.

adjusted pressures as the fronts were to high and the rears were to high
and off we went again...

i was enjoying myself

Hall bends.
are epic but getting it stopped for the Hairpin you can so easy out-brake yourself....Bad idea as there is little to no run-off in that area!
Barn.
Is a hard corner to set up for as it tightens but you need speed to enter the straight..

Coppice.
this corner is something else its a flat straight into a left that climbs, how brave are you?
at the beginning of the day i was changing down to 3rd to take this but at the end of the day i was taking this corner flat in 4th under power! not to be done with cold tyres

Charlies.
out of coppice you climb and turn into a blind corner
keep wide then cut back aiming for the speaker pole in the distance you cant see yet then adjust for the final exit,

Parkstraight.
out of Charlies down hill then it rises again over the brow on power and down the gears to hard brakes to Park

Park.
this is tighter than it looks but you need speed on the exit

Chris curve.
POWER and hang on changing up the gears as i went, ATB diff working well stopping the understeer

Gooseneck.
ow man what a double corner getting it slowed, right followed by left that changes to downhill mid corner

Mansfield.
down hill slow it to a second gear hard right
each time pacing this made me smile as the marshal had his feet up in his hut
power up through the gears to one of my favourite combination

The mountain.
down the gears to 2nd, hard left then hard right to fast climb almost air at the top car goes so light the revs pick up at the traction changes

Power again to Hall bends to do it all again but better Smile

Favourite corners!
coppice, show you've got balls and do it!
Gooseneck, for the shear amount of changes in one corner
Mountain, just like a roller-coaster at the top
Hall bends, got to be brave as no run off's

in and out for sessions all day i racked up a total of 147 track miles about 67 laps using 40 ltrs of fuel 16.7MPG
Smile

my tyres were excellent R888's did very well
with the ATB diff I'm not killing the outside edges with understeer so the tyres are evenly worn across the face
this is the first full track-day with the ATB and I'm well impressed

i went out for my last session at about 4pm stayed out quite a long time, temperatures were under control and not climbing all in the car worked as it should very well all day

i was changing back to my road tyres when i was offered a ride in the charged 6 oh yes please,
grabbed my helmet and was in as it was close to 5pm track closing time,
i think we managed 3 laps...an epic 3 laps being one of the last cars on the track
i must say a welded cage and proper seats and harnesses make a big difference in a car oh and the extra horses too

back to the paddock
finish changing the wheels pack the car and say goodbye to everyone

on the way back to Cleethorpes we stopped for a carvery in a pub which was a lot better that the stuff we ate the previous day

Day 3
Home day
reversed our trip of day one
A16->A180->M180->M18->M1->A42->M42->M5
320 miles used 38 ltrs of fuel to return 38MPG in the 6.
so it wern't a fluke! 38mpg on a run Smile

any way home now and unpacked the car which needs a good wash as its ate lots of flies

the future of my 6..
i was spoilt going out in the charged 6 i would love that car but...
its not what I want from my car

I want a Sunday car I can take the wife across the moors
and do the occasional track day

Oh wait I have that now! Big Grin

what i really want...
a Van so i can tow the car to track days further away so i can try more different circuits

Humm

I've had a shit few weeks with home life of late, so when  BHPtrackdays  posted on my news-feed saying 3 places left for Castle Combe for the following Monday.
i checked my shift pattern which confirmed a day off so the choice was made!

packed the car as normal on the sunday for early start on the monday

8 wheels
40 ltrs fuel
jack
chocks
spares
tools
tarp
helmet

monday morning
fill up with fuel full tank + 40ltrs V-power then off to Combe,
got to Combe at 745am by hell was it foggy! couldnt see from one end of the padoc to the other

went and signed on, then back to change car from road tyres onto R888's
drivers brief at 830am
then waited for sighting laps.....
waited.....
waited.....
the track was so fog bound it was to dangerous to open so we waited some more...
and waited....
and waited....
1130 the sighting laps started it was still foggy on the main straight but the back side was in full sun,
then 1200 they called an early dinner.

1300 they opened the track full open pit lane
was still patchy fog but you could see through it

the fog cleared and the rest of the day was on and off track as and when

I had 1 spin all day my fault as i took to much speed entering Bobbies and ended up heading for the solar panels after a half spin
no damage just sticky tyres full of sand which took a few laps to clear off

2 issues with the car which have arisen

1st is an annoying idle problem when hot which i cured by unplugging the power steering pressure sensor no idea how that effects it but it did.

2nd issue i need a new exhaust!
as i started the day just passing noise test at 96db
I needed earplugs for the drive home.
the db reading has been getting higher after each track-day so i suspect Ether i have no Cat left or the two silencers are empty of packing now
this will need sorting before the next track day as i belive i will not pass now

so all in all a good day just i little slow to start

Awesome work! Looking great on track as usual, shame about the exhaust failing, sounds like probably cat or similar is disintegrating!

PAS pressure sensor increases idle effort (and possibly idle speed setpoint too - not sure) to prevent stalling when load comes on the system. GTi6s have a long inlet manifold, so by the time the idle speed has dropped due to the load coming on the system, by the time the ICV has opened to allow more air in reaction to the speed drop, it's too little too late and the engine will nearly stall, especially if you're on the lockstops. Probably the sensor cutting in and out due to being faulty when warm...

I  really do enjoy my time on track, the whole learning the cars caricteristics on the limit is the fun bit,
you get to realise very small changes in weather/temp/tyres/tyre pressure can make a dramatic effect on the car,
which then forces you to change driving styles or come in and change stuff till you find what you like

I'm on this now!
I have removed the cat back system
the Cat Matrix is still intact but both Box's on the system are empty! they have a nice empty ring to them when taped!

I have dropped the system into a local Exhaust manufacturer who are going to cut open and repack reweld both box's for £60
apparently they use good quality packing that dont degrade or blow out over time

we will see
