I use a Valeo one, came free with one of the clutches I did.

I cut the input shaft off a dead gearbox and put a handle on the end

I used a deep 1/2 socket last time iirc, or the clutch tool that came in my gti6 valeo kit.

I'm now thinking that the way I do it with a deep 3/8" socket isn't the best. Is the alignment tool only to centralise the clutch plate to allow the input shaft to locate or does it actually centralise the plate for when it's in use? By this I mean if the plate isn't smack in the middle will the plate spin on the piss? I'm thinking when you press the clutch the pressure plate releases and the clutch plate will be floating, is that right?

Clutch is always centered on the gearbox splines?
