Daves Compound Twin turbo XUD
#31
Finally cleared out my car, took all the rubbish, mcdonalds wrappers and shit out, and engine block and pumps, broken sub and general weight that I had been hauling round with me for ages... gave it a service, changed the oil for the first time in this engine for about 2 years.. topped up gearbox oil... goes slightly better probably due to weight more than anything though.

Got a set of almost brand new tyres for cheap, with vac knobblies still on...

and gave it its annual wash.. put new wipers on too ... waiting to finish uni so can pull block and fit new goodies...

Getting feal fuckin ansy right now, been blasting it about at night in the fog, and I just want MOARR. Its not being too bad at the moment, just typical pump problems.

Bout time I updated this abit.... since being back from uni i've done some work on the car...

Fitted new turbo...

Unfortunately this happened shortly after, and totally dropped my sump;

As I was running 9mm for ages, this thing needed FAR more fuel to maximise its potential... or many hours of modifying the 9mm...

and was up at james's with ruan at weekend, and fitted an 11mm pump again... this made it perform abit better....

When I got back I had time to tweak boost and fuel abit more, this made it perform pretty well..

But just the pressure on the head this happened shortly after, I wasnt able to get a proper video of it Sad

As soon as its on chat it just sprews water out the header tank.... so heads coming off today...

Will try get some better photos up of it, when its running how I want it...

There are several teething issues, exhaust downpipe fouls gear linkages so pops it out of 2nd, 4th and reverse when dropping clutch.... the intake pipe isnt ideal, and neither is the boost control but these shall be sorted and hopefully not turn into one of those temporary permanent solutions that I seem to do.... also obviously HG needs changing... I was tempted to do a major service and just swap blocks but I cba and need to get back to uni at the moment, that requires alot more work really...

anyway must get on, dave

lmao you need to add the "team orange engine bay" to your sig mate Tongue

Mine does that too ATM, everything is orange again HG is properly fecked! (have to leave the cap loose or it fills up cylinders when parked) Unplanned engine build on the go now so should be working again by FCS Big Grin

So, how much boost + 11mm pump = broken? I would ask what turbo but know you won't tell.........

Mark you need to just pull your finger out and f*cking change it ! Smile only takes an evening or a day or something....

Pulled the head off today, and thought since i've got head off might aswell drop sump and bang some better rods in...

After dropping sump I also noticed an interesting discovery!...

oi oii Dave! This is what i like to see.... oh noes, whats that? metal fillings inside the fuel pump..?! naaah MINOR! haha, no fkin about.

You been runing stock rods this whole time? Confusedhock: Are you opting for forged or hdi spec? Or Dave spec for that matter... (what happened to those epic diy welded /balanced rods?)

That turbo, mmmh those blades look awfully similiar to the standard k14 style... possibly a bigger kkk series? k27!? Big Grin But then again, I've only had like an 1hrs kip so maybe not..

good work dave i love how you pull these things to bits and swap rods like its a small task. Big Grin

what boost was you running or was it just th sheer volume of air that did it?

Hahah novos you know it Wink alreet IDI will sort it out haha... it was washed from inside out before put back together dont worry hehe

Yeh i've always had stock rods, hence killed so many engines. I have about 6 sets of HDI rods now which just takes effort to fit.. I did sometime last year which turned out to be a total fail, and last night I started fitting them again today while redoing head gasketing/decomp.

Its not a KKK turbo lol

Ash its not much more work to do them than to change headgasket.... just a case of dropping sump off and pushing them out the top... I have run into some problems today though that has really f*cked me off... got them on lathe to skim and instantly f*ck a piston so have to sack one off and dig a scrap one out.

Can you guess which one is the new one? Wink

edit: just realised its actually one of darrens old ones from one of his early blocks haha

Also started majorly wanking over pump porn today aswell... its been a while having one stripped completely, started constructing another german fueller 8-)

Also got most of this on a timelapse I may put on youtube, unfortunately the disassembly got f*cked on my phone which pissed me off, and the piston thing, progress has been slow today and only really just got bottom end build back up... head and turbo on tomorrow hopefully...

Right, now that i've had some sort of sleep, lets just forget any mention of kkk.. lol i mean if your previous was t28, new one is bound to be bigger.. with v-bands like holsets...not 'inferior tech' tho.. mmmh, hah enough of the guessing. I just want to see this goo! Your on a tmic too, how the fk do you manage to get the boost pipe from turbo to the cooler without lifting the master everytime you hit boost??

Sorry, do you mean you've been using xud rods?! How long have they been holding on average? Why were the welded rods a fail btw? As in snapped i take it ..lol.

^^ IIRC the weld on the rods made a bid for freedom and filled the sump with bits of weld so he sacked them off lol

Yeh it will flow more than the T28 I think.... may put that up for sale soon, maybe... yeh its TMIC, I still stand by the need for a fmic is not needed if you have a really efficient turbo... and if its not efficient and you need a FMIC then your turbos not big enough Wink I would fit a fmic, I had one on before and still have all the stuff its just not worth all the insurance fitting it. There is no issues with the tmic, the turbo exits, theres an adaptor and the stock pipe goes over it..

Novos have been using stock rods since the dawn of time really... I've never really been able to push the xud as far as I want purely for this reason, thats why ive been on 9mm for ages aswell, need a car too bad Sad
Mark I never fitted those rods that was just for lols, the epic fail happened for other reasons but I wont go into that haha, its in this thread somewhere I think anyway, or over on pug306.

Mmh yeah i agree with the tmic, I've currently got on a 406 k14 that has a diff fitting outlet so had to chop up a corsa fmic to make an adapter but it's such a faff. New ones going to need v band ones making up and due to the stupidly big cold size housing I reckon it will hit the master, ah well. All part of the xud fun!

Oh right, from what I gather you abuse the shit out of the stock rods though upto 6k so I'm thinking there must be a level they can hack. Just trying to ascertain if me fitting stronger hdi rods is worth it as reliability is key for me next clinical yr at uni (probs not best I keep a boosted xud then lol). With skimmed pistons do you think 200brake 30psi could be a reliableish daily? //end optimism

Dont get me wrong a FMIC will help, but no way as much as a better turbo...

Yeh I abuse the absolute shit out of the blocks, ive never had any shell issues.. even on this engine I pulled, and I suspect its had bent rods for a long time because it used to be on a high booster 11mm/T2 setup, and have previously killed another block like that... also there was tons of solid burnt on oil gunk up the side of the piston which couldnt have happened in the past 2 days. I still stand by them dieing from advance/boost and not rpm....

The experience ive had with HDI rods is limited, im basing alot of my expectations on how darrens was setup before... 6.5 grand and silly advance.... The hdi rods will quite easily be reliable at 200hp, providing your not making that at 1500rpm Wink I guess i'll find out how this goes with rods now...

Quick update anyway heads back on and other shit, pretty much gotta put pump back on now, and then go and bed the f*ck out the rings!!!!

Even the bent rods that I pulled, you can see they are slightly worn on one side, apart from that they are pretty good nick... and I thrashed that engine everywhere... will put a photo up later along with a bunch of others
