18mm was on the GTi-6s so that instantly makes it better by a magnitude of 6.
Hopefully someone will come along shortly with a real answer

as far as i thought, it made no odds?
only advantage i can see is the 18mm ones will be stronger, so therefore 'better', but if you're ever in the situation where you'd have benifitted from a stronger ball joint, id reckon that the rest of the car would be shagged anyway...
i have both on mine, cuz im thats how i roll.

Pug upgraded them on the 6 from 16mm to 18mm why i have no idea. probly not worth the hastle of swaping them over for a extra 2mm

16mm = lighter!
Anyway, the 18mm's give a bit more strength for the lard arsed later models, and wear a bit slower.

Yep. Later on they changed over to 18mm but most ph2's have 16mm. Usually the 2.5's that went over to 18mm.

Ph2 has 16mm
ph2.5 has 18mm
I can not see any benifit what so ever in swapin from 16 to 18. Iv had both on my 6's . Currently on 16mm and i see no difference.
