Halfords pro get my vote too, never had a problem replacing stuff and some of mine are 10 years old and have put up with some utter abuse. One of my ratchet spanners bears the scars of bridging the gap between the positive terminal and the chassis but is still going strong.

+1 for the halfords. My dad bought a set a few years ago lifetime Garentee. Had a ratchet snap other day and he had to pay for the mechanism inside as it was a older ratchet but still no problems. About the worst part about them is some of the older boxes the inges are pants.

Yeah the halfrauds pro sets have pants boxs / all the hinges / catchs are just bending plastic, and all of them i had failed..the newer halfrauds advanced stuff has decent hinged boxs though are much better!

Only thing apparently Halfords ratchets cannot stand up to, is having a rattle gun on the other side undoing a rusty nut.....
Apparently it fucks the mechanism... Don't ask how I know this lol!!!

So managed to get the engine home; erm i got straight to work on stripping this down. Baring i mind this is being built in a shed, excuse the bodge engine mount
Ermm got the clutch off, sump off, and the first rod and piston out ready to measure and send off to PEC who are going to find me some conrods suitable for the engine...
erm got to a point where im not sure where to go on the 1.8 lump, had a few mishaps, well, this is what i think; messgaes sent to Niall his is my now delegated 1.8brainz for this hopefully he'll tell me if its f*cked or im paranoid..
anywho, some pics...

So, just finished cleaning up for today, may as well chuck this in, incase anyone is interested at all, a couple of recommendations.
Firstly, i'd recommend using gunk to clean up utensils and tools after a days work; there's nothing worse than getting a tool set dirty, then going back and using dirty, greasy tools. I use the large Gunk tins and pour it into a spray bottle. (You can buy the spray bottles already, but it works out to be twice as much, stingy'student again)
Secondly, i'd recommend strongly that after removing bolts, parts, or anything on a small scale, that the bolts are bagged up and labelled for later use; i'm just using normal sandwhich bags and a piece of paper inside telling me where they're from. keeps all the bolts together without losing any and ensures they all go back in the same place afterwards
Also, keeping the area as generally, as tidy and clean as possible; theres nothing worse than removing a bolt, lobbing' it out and not being able to find it again, 4 months down the line.
Finally, keeping spare tubs, pots and kitchen paper to hand is always a useful tip. Always handy!

Smallest of updates ever..
Next on the books is to find myself a proper engine worksman; not a garage; so i can get the cylinder liners re-seated.
Also heading to peugeot garage to get the stubborn gudgeon pin out so i can send some measurements away; i dont think i've got enough heat/power on it, peugeot said they're happy to sort it
Apart from that, progress will slow, all now with new "plans" later this year which will stall finances for a bit.. but still on target for next FCS

Ginge if you want to send some bits to the real world, I can give you the details of the company who did my engine work. Very cheap for what they do and can post stuff back to you.

As for postage, i'd need to post the whole engine

So what's going on with this now? You've finally conned someone into buying your car, so that's £X00 of car funds just lying around, hope you're putting it to good use... (ie i fully expect to see a pic of a GT2256 or similar sat in your shed)

I hadn't expected to move house ... so unfortunately this is back to square one.
Also, getting the any forged 1.8 rods made up is proving a farse; i was in contact with PEC who said they'd look at building some custom jobbies but the effort for that just seems pointless.
Finding the right person to help put the manifold together (on the island) is pretty limited also, most of them need dimensions to start anything at all, of which i have nothing.
I'm still really keen to get this back up together but i think it's going to be a 2L turbo rather than the original proposed. I'm most likely going to invest in a welder with Strictlyderv and start making a manifold up ourselves and get a donor GTI in a lockup which we can start playing around with.
But yeh, moving house im afraid has halted this along with the above.
Bit of a shitter i know, but finger crossed i come across a cheap enough lockup and a donor GTI engine

in fairness, it's an easier option than the 1.8 route, this is all, if i had time and money to throw i could perhaps do something original. Who know, the 2L lump could get a transer at one point? nothing's certain yet

I cannot believe 1.8 rods are such a nightmare... I can't see the point in this build if you're doing a 2.0 turbo build... It's been done a thousand times before... You might as well get an OEM gti6 lump, skim the pistons for a decomp, bolt a turbo on and be done with 280hp...
The whole point of the 1.8 is that it'll drop the torque figure, make for a revvier engine which should be epic to drive... Remember a GTi6 is over 80kg heavier than a 1.8... That's like having me sat on your front bumper for more understeer....

But you'd have an fun whilst doing it.
But in all seriousness, my head isn't in this at the moment, as said up there ^^^^^ there's a lot more on my plate than this, so it's off for the time being whilst i get my life back on track, then i can focus on this.
A massive shame, i know.

6 pages, and a picture of a rusty oem bottom end is all we have to look at.
This will not do.

TBH i was really looking forward to seeing this (although im doing my own in a slightly different form) but its probably best you dont. That bottom end really does look wrecked and it would be a shame to see you spend alot, get it running well just for it to f*ck up a mile down the road
(that sounds sarcastic...it isn't)

..as was i mate, and i see where you're at with it all. The bottom end isn't in a good way in all honesty i got it from the scrappers to get the rods mainly (they were about to scrap the engine so had to either take it or leave it) but as you can understand, change of circumstances flip the ideas around a bit.
Good luck with your's anyway; if you need any help at all, give us a shout, i've got pages and pages of notes and emails from PEC for 1.8 rods that i can chuck your way.

As said before Alex, i havn't got the space to carry this on, it was and still is in the shed in the garden, but moving house to a flat with no garden let a alone a shed; find me an alternative place and funds to continue it and sure, i'll carry it on
