tapping is the valves being bent. If they are slightly bent they will tap. Think thats hitting the top of the piston every time it comes up? If they are bent a bit more they will be wearing away the guides they sit in. Either way any tapping you are looking at lost power AND a head rebuild which is anywhere between £400 - 700 depending on how much work you get done, how much damage there is and whether you get it done pro or do it yourself. What Niall said about the tapping getting faster and louder the higher the revs. Cambelt replacement is killer on these so unless its been done recently id get it done asap!
Basically. It pays to get a good 6 in the first place instead of getting a crap one and having to fix it!
Standard stuff to look for is shagged beam, beam mounts, make sure the temperature is in a decent place on the test drive. mmmm rallye specific... make sure the window winders work? D:
oh and make sure the racoon filter is in good condition. They are a dealer only part and expensive to get hold of if its knackered
