so what they are legal as long as you make them look as if they have always been that colour? the question in google shows stories of people being taken to court for arguing the case?

Nah from what I read, they can either be white or yellow, but other colours (ie blue) are illegal.
I add on that yellow light is easier for the eye to pick up at night, and I've put brighter bulbs in to make sure I can still see clearly.
Ill say this, I've driven past hundreds of police, and none of them ever even look twice. And I always drive with my lights on, so its not like they just dont see...
