Stage 2 is a lot of work when fitting the intercooler, but well worth it as the power gains are impressive.
Are you good with mechanical work or would you get somebody to do it for you?

If you're doing it yourself there are many guides on TDOCUK, look in the diesel section there is a 'stickied' thread in there somewhere.

For power figures check out my site: www.hdi-tuning.co.uk

I've written a fair number of stage 1, stage 1+, stage 2 and stage 2+ maps now and if you can fit an intercooler and upgrade the clutch yourself it can be a really cheap way to great power.

A stage 2 or stage 2+ hdi will really surprise a lot of cars....

Anyone who understands tuning, ecus and the software on them and has the relevant tools for flash tuning can yes.

I'd be happy to help you learn if you are wanting to learn to tune....?

Just a bit more at the top end. Not for everyone though as it can be a little smokey.

You can turn the boost up a little, but the turbo is out of it's efficiency at anything more than ~20psi (1.4bar). Once you hit ~25psi it'll just be cooking the intake charge and making less power than before.

Ok i was thinking about taking it to 1.3 bar but i havent got a cooler yet, would it still be safe?

It's not worth going stage 2 or turning the boost up before you fit an intercooler, you'll just cook the engine quick time.

As previously stated you want to get all the requirements for keeping the engine cool before stage 2. I believe it's well worth the effort. I'm looking into doing it myself on my hdi. Smile

Ah i see, what you want is a shiny ebay one that's got really crap flow, but looks good through the bumper.

Introduce this to a jet wash and she should be just about right:

Not being funny dude, but you can't have good flow, new, shiny and cheaps all at once, just not going to happen lol. Have a look on the forge motorsport site for an idea of your shiny, new, high-flow price range.

What makes you think an old intercooler is going to flow less well than a new one? It's not like radiators which can get silted up - it's only got air flowing through it.

Yer dunt look bad that. I have done there about 85quid, i was just waiting to see if any cheaper ones popped up.

If it is a new one theres a lot less chance its not going to have had oil are maybe any other rubbish going through it lol. But i suppose i could just jet wash it like you said.

Lol no, that's for the cheap and nasty ebay ones, decent ones go from about £200 upwards, look: http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/content...MINT104UNI. That's only 500mm x 175mm too, which by the sounds of it is smaller than what you're looking for. You might be lucky and get one for less than a ton, but i'd be surprised.

Fair enough, i see your point, but it's going on an old diesel at the end of the day - if it's not oily now it will be soon! lol The cheap new intercoolers tend to flow a lot less than most oem coolers thanks to the budget they've been developed on; the ebay ones are being sold on the strength of the shine, if you know what i mean.

Yer suppose so think ill just go for a second hand one then. http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/111287429787?nav=SEARCH
This one seems descent but not sure if i want one a bit bigger

Fair play, that's a bargain tbf.

The toyo sports ones will do the job fine for what we're doing, but i'm anal about these things and like to do it properly lol. The larger volume will mean fractionally more lag and the lower proportional flow means a greater pressure drop across the cooler, it's mostly about efficiency i guess. I just don't like the idea of paying more for something that won't do as good a job, but then again my car looks like a tramp (matches the owner) so it doesn't matter what parts look like, as long as they do the job. Makes it much easier to get bargains lol.
