haha yep This engine snapped on idle. Only small dents in the pistons which the engineering shop didn't care about so i guess they will be fine!
The head went straight into the bin though. Couldn't be bothered with having to rebuild an entire head including valve guides.

very unlikely it would need guides, just 16 valves at £8 each (or good used from a corroded head for example and the seats cutting, shame to have binned it tbh, plenty of people would have given you good money for it for rebuilding.

Well another good afternoon at it. I started by getting the oil pump and windage tray back on then ended up with a bit of a hold up. There seemed to be a fair bit of end float in the crank and could i find my feeler gauges? Could i f*ck! So a trot of to Halfrauds to get some more to measure the float. Thankfully there was a lot less than what it felt like. The Peugeot specification for end float is between 0.07 and 0.27mm and mine was 0.10 so nearer to the lower margin which I'm happy with.
After that, continued to get everything back on, new crankshaft seals in, new crank pulley on and then cleaned up the mating face of the head (forgot pictures at this point).
Got the head on and all torqued down and cleared some of the crap out of it. As you can see, the head still needs a lick of paint but i figured that i would have more room and easier to work with it bolted to the head as my man shed is getting far to congested with parts and tools lol.
All thats left now is to bolt on some more parts that need painting before hand (will be done Thursday), Get the head tidied up, cams in, timed up and its ready to go in so should be finished next Saturday!
Thankfully the hard part is done now so I'm happy

Its almost there!
Today i was up bright and early to drive down to Havant to pick up some shiny parts from Rich W at Lynx engineering. One of my shiny parts was one of his manifolds from his Rotrex kits. I was always against using one of these kits as i wanted to do something different and i don't think the double cost of what this build will cost me is justifiable for an extra 20bhp which i could probably get close to with a smaller charger pulley later on down the line. Not only that but i like to be different
I will say though, the manifolds that he supplies are really really well made and well worth the cost.
Engine is now built. Just needs timing up and a flywheel fitting (still undecided if it will be a lightened fly). Didn't get any decent pics of it fully built as it got dark by the time i was finished but you get the idea

The manifolds do look well made, but I've always thought they are a bit of a 'boxy' shape to provide good flow?

Get a daytime picture
Real good work with this, shame about having to buy the inlet, but as you say, it looks really spot on! Good to see this project going with speed!

Doesn't matter as it's getting charged, turbo/super manifolds are always like that. It's NA engines where you need the manifold/bodies as long and smooth as possible.
Coming on well though Niall, should be quick when it's done!

Not necessarily. It purely depends on the pulse of the engine. Inlet manifolds do not want to be too smooth, otherwise you will suffer a lack of turbulence. This will consequentially reduce the atomisation of the fuel injected, and increase knock. Inlet manifolds are seldom polished, and left quite rough for this reason.

But modelling it on box section I'm not so sure about LOL...
That's more like it!
As good an option IMO is shortening down the OE GTi6 manifold to a length that'd be a harmonic of the original length. I've seen that done before...
That also ^^

Lol that is literally a box welded to a plate via four bits of drainpipe, for some reason I always thought the lynx kits were a bit more... I dont know exactly, proper? Just out of interest how much do they charge for one of those?

Common misconception, but the fact that you've changed the density of the air coming into the engine doesn't change the fact that pulse tuned manifolds are better. Although it does change the ideal length and shape.
You'll find any race engine that is boosted is running long, gradual runners that are pulse tuned the same as an N/A:

Tbh this is a budget build. I would love a proper manifold to be made for me but i just don't have the money for that for the few extra ponies it would release. Again, its like the Lynx kit imo. The extra 2k is not worth the 15-20bhp gain. The manifold might not be the best designed thing in the world but its very well made and will do the job I'm asking of it.
Alex, how much do you think it cost? Bearing in mind I've already told you lol.

Fair enough, I've learnt something there then.
Not sure why I bothered going to college, it seems most things we were taught there are wrong!
That said though, on road cars (or at least all the ones I've had so far) do have little shitty manifolds with a turbo, and nice long/smooth ones without. I guess its more down to cost and space though, they don't need anything better when they're only aiming for relatively low amounts of power.

Yeah fair shout, you know i can appreciate that lol. I genuinely have no idea, since you bought it from lynx i'm guessing about £250? Pfft, like hell i listen to anything you say. :p
