18mm was on the GTi-6s so that instantly makes it better by a magnitude of 6.
Hopefully someone will come along shortly with a real answer

as far as i thought, it made no odds?
only advantage i can see is the 18mm ones will be stronger, so therefore 'better', but if you're ever in the situation where you'd have benifitted from a stronger ball joint, id reckon that the rest of the car would be shagged anyway... i have both on mine, cuz im thats how i roll. Pug upgraded them on the 6 from 16mm to 18mm why i have no idea. probly not worth the hastle of swaping them over for a extra 2mm

16mm = lighter!
Anyway, the 18mm's give a bit more strength for the lard arsed later models, and wear a bit slower.

GTi6s in Ph2 guise seem to have both 16 and 18mm though...
