Thought i'd do a write up on this.
This was my first time doing this job and learnt as I went. Not too hard to do at all.
Basics first,
- make sure the car is off and the keys are out of the ignition
- handbrake on
- any thing over half a tank of fuel I would NOT attempt this, as there will be a hell of a lot of fuel coming out when you take the pump out.
- disconnect the battery if you want, I didn't.
- have a bucket or a lot of rag spare!
1. Uncover the fuel pump to begin with. Located under the rear drivers side seat
2. Prise off the cover using a screwdriver
3. Disconnect the plug, and the 2 pushfit fuel hoses. Push on the green and white plastic part of the fitting whilst pulling gently to disconnect them.
4. Tap round the ring around the out side of the pump, you want to be tapping around anti-clockwise to undo it. Mind your fingers!
Lift it out! Just shove the wiring connector and fuel pipes right out the way beforehand!
Best bet is to lift it straight into a bucket so you don't get diesel all over the inside of your car
5. Now you have your lift pump out, now to start stripping it apart
6. First to disconnect the level sender. Pull the wires out gently from behind the clip. There's 2 clips you need to push in to release the unit. Bit fiddly, be gentle and don't break anything.
7. Pull down on it gently to remove it
8. Next up to separate the fuel pump. Push the pump down and hook your finger/thumb under the catch and pull it back gently to release the 2 halves
*Watch out nothing falls apart* I lost the circular orange plastic thing under the spring as it shot off. There is an o ring that sits under the orange circular plastic thing, make sure this goes back on!
9. Next to separate the bottom half of the pump, a little bit fiddly. I found it helps to pull up on the plastic tab whilst pushing in the 3 little tabs.
Pull up on this gently
10. Once all 3 tabs have been pushed in, you'll be presented by this \/ . The strainer for the pump. Give this a bloody good clean!
11. Also clean out all the crap in here too
12. There's a plunger type thing in this hole that could also do with a clean
13. Unclip this part and give it a clean. I found a twig in here in my other pump!
*there seems to be 2 different varieties of this part, one has a clip on "window" the other is part of the moulding*
14. Putting it back together is pretty straight forward, just make sure everything is clean in the pump before reassembling
