What are the best bulbs?
#1
Hi all,

I have the reflector type crystal headlights in the phase 3 model. I am wondering what everyone would say would be the best bulbs for the headlight and high beam? I want as bright and clear beam pattern as possible really Smile

Thanks,
Jack

Osram nightbreakers or Phillips Extreme Vision. Don't fit HIDs unless you fit projectors first.

Okay brilliant. I don't need "white" light and stuff as having that on standard bulbs makes them duller I have heard due to the blue coating they spray on.
And haha yeah I have also heard about the HID's and tbf suffered enough by idiots in old corsa's and punts with them haha. Never been a fan of the blue lights anyways I find I can't see as much with them in the rain and foggy days etc.

Thanks

I find my factory fitted HIDs are miles better than any other lights I've had on previous cars...but they do have levellers, washers and were designed for the car lol...

I used nightbreakers in the 306s with good results though. Smile

Just found a review that auto car did back in 2013 and they tested philips x-treme vision as the best. Which is one of the ones you suggested. Might give them a go tbf. I am right in thinking they are H7's yeah?

Brilliant Smile Thanks Smile

Gonna have a go at cleaning up the earths for the lights as well and making sure all the connections are good. I remember reading something ages ago saying something like 0.5v drop due to bad earth/connections can cause something like a 20% drop in light output or something.

This is what I found. I have no idea how legitimate it is but it does make me want to upgrade my factory wiring. You basically just run some new cables and separate relays direct from battery and to the battery earth I suppose. And use the 12 coming from the headlight relay to activate the new larger relays.

10.5V : 510 lumens
11.0V : 597 lumens
11.5V : 695 lumens
12.0V : 803 lumens
12.5V : 923 lumens
12.8V : 1000 lumens
13.0V : 1054 lumens
13.5V : 1198 lumens
14.0V : 1356 lumens
14.5V : 1528 lumens

Halfords "120℅ brighter" are wank, unless you just want to spend extra money.

I just buy Bosch because they seem to last the longest

Upping the voltage will surely reduce the lamp life though?

It wouldn't be upped any more than what the alternator produces and what the bulbs are designed to use. It will just be upped back to standard and get rid of voltage drop due to bad connections etc. Im not doing all that. Just going to clean all the earths up.
