Picked up the K04 today. Tiny tiny bit of up and down play but all's good.
I was origanlly intending on just bolting it on but under further inspection up against the K14 I've decided on making a hybrid instead.

As you can see the k04 sits inside the K14 exhaust housing, all the will need doing is just a tiny bit of reeming to fit the wheel inside as it just touches and I will need an oil drain pipe fitted.
Now whats going to go wrong as it seems too good to be true :?
Yep it appears to be a straight bolt-on jobbie that's why I've done it Dan.
Appart from the wheel just touching the housing but it's so minimal it will be an easy fix.
Rigged it up on the spare engine and all appears well
The biggest problem with doing it this way, is theres more to the turbine hosing than just making the turbine wheel fit...
You need to open up the main "slit" by X ammount also, or else you generally find these homebrew hybrids end up making chronic egts / cooking themselves all the time...
If it was me Id have tried to mount the complete unit....but fair play, look forward to hearing the results!

Cheers for that Darren. I am fairly new to turbo's so my knowledge on the technical side isn't great.
I looked at the 2 different housings and the K04 housing which bolts onto the manifold is actually about 1cm smaller.
There are holes for water cooling on there but that seems like a PITA to get working on an XUD.
I short, if I clip the blades or ream the housing and sort out an oil drain would this work with good results?

It's not just to do with that, its also to do with the radius of the scroll and the width of the scroll down, in relation to that slot... That determines the backpressure and gas velocity entering the turbine wheel... That's how a vnt turbo works....
There's more than meets the eye, been there got the tshirt... Seriously look as to whether you can bolt that k04 to the stock manifold... I promise you it'll be better than putting it in a stock housing without correct adjustment.

as for the water cooling, as long as you can get banjos for the pipes you can tee into the rad pipes but there won't be any flow until the stat opens. another option which may work better is to tee into the heater matrix pipes. a trip to the scrappers and chop up the matrix pipes and measuring them for the tee fittings would be a good call.
My advice is don't put it on the heater matrix pipes, the matrix is finely balanced so it doesn't just push it all through the matrix when it's hot, but keeps the head cool until the thermostat opens...
If I were to put it anywhere, it'd be to get it off the bleed line off the head...

One of the main reasons I want to use the k14 exhaust side is because it's a near straight bolt on. Also I don't have a welder or have the funds at the moment to pay someone as I've started a new job and won't get paid till the end of the month
Also the K04 exhaust inlet which bolts onto the manifold is smaller than the k14 so that would need further machining/plating to get that fitted then the down pipe bit is about 4" round because I think the cat bolted onto it.
I'm not looking for mega power here, the car's my daily so around 160 bhp is my target as I don't want it blowing up straight away and with the car being light it makes up for it.
Will this target be realistic with this hybrid?
I don't think I will bother with watercooling TBH.
You need a lathe...if your even going to try and hybridize it, you need to do it right....its gotta be exactly round / within spec or its gunna run like poo / not work as it should....but even doing it on a lathe is hard, as getting the perfect clearance across the entire turbine is very hard without specialist gear.... This is what companys like turbo technics make a living from doing...Hence much easier to bolt blower on complete.

Been doing abit of thinking and taking in advice :oops: and have changed my mind from doing a hybrid. It has proved difficult to find somewhere to dremel it out and as people say it needs to be perfect plus it will always be a restriction.
So, i'm just gunna bolt it on XUD style instead.
My only concern now is the reduction from the exhaust side to the down pipe causing a restriction but everyone else's seems fine.
Not sure how much of a restriction it would be TBH, that is how mine is done on the TD04 and that seems to work fine, just open out the elbow as much as you can at the flange end and it should be fine

Thats what I was thinking. Gunna try take it to the local forge to see if they can help me out with bits.
Would my pump be able to fuel this thing with it only being a 9mm?

You only really need a bit of 8mm plate steel, a grinder, a welder and a hole saw to do it yourself oh and a handful of nuts and bolts.........
IMO the pump should be fine, mine manages the TD04 with no problem anyhoo!
Not quite how it should be done and the holesaw will only be able to be used once... Glad to see the farmers are about!
Nope, it is how it should be done, just make sure its a HSS hole saw and not a wood one, otherwise you will do well to get through it once, not many other ways to make a perfect hole with out a waterjet or laser cutter but not many people have those at home
Holesaws are fine, I use them all the time.... Use them slow, and they acaully last for ever, use them all the time on the farm in h beams in the sheds

Managed to get over to the local forgery after work to see if he can do me some plates. He said £50 originally, then I asked how much for just the plates, not shaped but just drilled out and he said £20 which I think is very reasonable as my drill is crap and I don't have a hole saw.

Yeah he'smy mates mums partner.
He's got some 8mm for the turbo to manifold and some 10mm for the turbo to exhaust.
Was having a look around the turbo and noticed a threaded hole going into the exhaust housing where the gasses spin the wheel, guessing it's an EGT gauge hole?
