Ben's Cabriolet
#1
Rainbow
Here we are!
Unfortunately my Dturbo is on her very last legs which is a royal shame as after 6 years of good running multiple track days and Nurburgring visits. Also 179000 on the clock and spending enough on it to the point where i could have been on my way to a deposit for a house.... Damn.
Well i don't do things in halfs ha ha
At the end of the day all i can say is laughs have been had a tears have been shed shes been a loyal companion.

But moving on to hopefully bigger and better things which lead me to buy this lovely 2000(W) 2.0 16v Cabriolet SE Pininfarina in China Blue

The Spec:

.All the electrics work
.Fully operational hydraulic roof
.Full "Tan" leather interior
.Cyclone Alloy wheels
.Standard cd player including a Clarion 6 cd multichanger
.Phase 3 styling
.Being the SE its got the higher spec shiny bits inside like a gti would have
.Working Remote Central locking
.12 months MOT

Coming upto 85000 on the clock and bought her £700... nice

Plans are to keep it clean and tidy. But knowing me once i have it up to standards and have a little extra money burning a hole in my pocket then the temptation will kick in

As for what needs doing to keep me happy:

.Replace the exhaust doughnut as its coving the engine in soot
.Give it a good clean inside and out
.Fix the electric Ariel
.Repair the 'Aero seal'
.Cambelt change
.Sort out the milky plastic rear window
.Swap my sound system from the Dturbo
.Remove the two remaining mudflaps
.New radiator
.Change all burnt out dash bulbs
.Swap my 'mister' jets from the Dturbo
.Retrim the binlid
.Replace the rear badge
.Find some oem or similar mats with the tan leather trim
.Fix or replace the drivers seat (torn bolster)
.Retrim the vinyl on the driver side window

Think there is enough there to keep me busy Smile

Hey guys and gals long time no see.
Lots changed on the car but noone will notice haha just fixing all the gremlins as normal.

Take one day off, throw in some bravery pills and a morning coffee and you will end up with this

Thats
  • Gates Cambelt Kit (Cambelt, tensioner and idler pulley)
  • Power steering fluid (To try and solve my heavy steering)
  • Power steering fluid (To try and solve my heavy steering)
  • 4x std ngk twin earth spark plugs (BKR6EK 2288)
  • Fully synthetic oil and filter
  • sealent and threadlock
  • And sat out of shoot is the antifreeze

A later edition after taking the aux belt of was well a aux belt....

some would say thats pretty much had it
and the cambelt?

Not much better safe to say that these look dare i say it original ???

So the pulleys can't be as bad surely? guess again
they look fine but the tensioner feels like it has been filled with gravel for ball bearings

Water pump however was fine haha

still had to be replaced though

the old water pump had a metal gasket and the new one is gasket material

Put it the coolant and turned the key and fired straight up
so proud of myself belt does seem to be tracking straight although rather close to the block but hasn't migrated any further so i guess it could be just in the correct position now instead of how it was before

It wasn't all that bad took me on my own about 6 hours to actually do the belts and pullies
At least an hour of that was trying to remember how the aux belt routed not only that i had to take my crank pullies off as they wouldn't slide in their slots which came up with numerous timing issues as i had to remove the pins and of course the cams shifted

I've bought new front tires and it's the first time i've seen asymmetrical tread on looks funny on the car
phoned up the company as i thought i had two directional tyres ha ha

These are now fitted and what a difference to the handling they make but the biggest difference is the fuel saving!!

This is what happened to my window cable after it snapped

safe to say thats pretty broken bought a new cable off ebay after all the bad reputation on the replacement cables this one has gone 2 months with no issues... touch wood

Oh i do love nissens may as well get the next best from oem

and why the original rotted out Sad

shame as its knackered the air con as well so i ripped that out while i was in there

oh note to anyone with the "updated" lower pipe you will have to order one of those as if its original there isn't a hop in hell its coming out of the rad even with a persuasive hammer Sad

Thought i would check the thermostat as the tempurature was everywhere anyway glad i did!

appears to be original but the proper peugeot out the diesel does a much better job of it Smile

Oh and the frame of the roof decided to shear off too... awesome Sad
but managed to drill out all 30 odd rivets peal back the skin and have it repair for £50 bargin Smile
restuck the skin with evo-stic and then came the task of the rivets... never again is all im going to say haha

That's all so far currently waiting for a spell of dry weather to change the complete exhaust back to standard from the block back inc all gaskets as it pops bangs and burbles. It makes me smile but annoys me as it sounds really broken.
And finally the brakes need a overhaul inc pads, discs, cables and hoses
Got all the parts just getting the weather and motivation time right haha

Well as you all know she past the mot eventually with flying colours but before she went through i done a little work on her which included new discs, pads, cables and the braided lines from the diesel
i also changed the exhaust midsection and replaced all the gaskets as she sounded like i had badly welded a jap can on the rear

i've been a little bit of a tart as normal when it comes to discs haha
and here are some pictures of my labour

plenty of life left in these right?
think it had a dodgy mot before i got it Sad

lovely chunk missing from this disc!

quickest method i find to compress pistons Smile

braided lines for the win

the handbrake cables was less useful than a red light at 3 am

two on the right are crushed and broken, The grey one was supposedly new when i bought it still had the manufactures label on it and it had smashed the plastic apart so it wasn't operational at all!

Finally just a shot of the midsection, which again was "new" when i bought the car. The part number comes back as a Klarius if you want a new exhaust avoid this at all costs its rubbish. Cheap thin metal that echos and is noisy as buggery

I went for a Walker system in the end and its lovely and quite and the metal is alot more substantial its thicker and the cat sits inside of it properly nice a firm
No pictures of the fuel or air filter change i think we have all seen that too many times
All in all a good days work
