Boost pipe woes
#1
Hi all

Just got the damned thing running and all! Basically I went for a little test drive, it developed about 16psi. Got to the end of the road and the gauge started going backwards Huh

Basically the hoses are getting sucked in for some reason.... Took off the boost pipe, tested the turbo it all works fine. Only when I put it on it sucks itself in!!! Angry

Could my intercooler be shagged? Pic below of what I'm on about.

Car is running with a 11mm pump and a K14-2 turbo.

Thanks for any help Smile

All plumbed correctly. Was driving beautifully for all of 0.8 of a mile Sad

I checked for a blockage on the turbo outlet pipe, it was fine

It's completely baffled me as to what's happening here.... I can try another intercooler but I thought it would pressurise the pipe going into it?

You have a diesel engine thats creating a vacuum? Hmm, that a boost hose pictures? Not a hose from an airfilter to the turbo?
Doesnt even own a 306.

Checked the filter and pipe, no problems with it....

Picture shows my turbo to intercooler pipe

I don't have an air filter hose....

A very tight fit though, I'll be changing it for something more suitable in due time. But no problems with it

I know! Sad

I'll have a shot at the intercooler and see how I go.....!

Bypass the intercooler and see if its still doing it, did you take that pipe off and put your hand over it to see if there was much pressure?

There was indeed pressure being developed but didn't check at the intercooler out pipe.... Blush

I'll have a shot driving it with no pipes connected and see if there's less vacuum Smile

Just run a pipre from that turbo outlet straight to the inlet and see if it still does it.

Ok well I tried the above advice..... No difference. Another intercooler, no difference. Yet without the boost pipe it runs perfect. Tested the boost again, boosts very well. No screeching from the turbo.

This is one of the weirdest things I've seen a diesel engine do Huh

I'm going out of my tiny nut here, I just want my car running right again! Sad

A vid of the problem

Solved Big Grin

It was..... A dirty air filter Huh it's getting the bin :p

Will try mate this turbo to the standard system and leave it at that. The car now drives really well Big Grin

Thank you all for your help Smile

First principals.

Right the engine is acting like an air pump.... sucking the air out of the pipe faster then its going in. creating a vacuum in the pipe.

so we have, before the pipe in question, a fairly big blockage.

Diagnosis...

Disconnect all parts downstream of the crushing in pipe and reattach one at a time until the blockage is found.

Pipe -> Intercooler -> Pipe -> Turbo -> Filter.

so try it with just the intercooler.... the intercooler and its pipe... the intercooler the pipe and turbo.... then add on the filter...

You will find the blockage.

Its unlikely to be the intercooler as you say you have replaced it to no avail. so it is either the pipe (unlikely), the turbo (possible), or the filter (likely). You say you have checked the filter and pipe (on another car?) and they have no issues, the only part that remains unchecked is the turbo.

It producing pressure is largely irrelevant, its flow rate you are lacking not pressure.

on a side note I'd still systematically check each component.

heh... started writing that hours ago but been busy.... just finished it.

Thought it would be the filter.
