MPVs

So I'm going on a tour about France this summer with some friends we originally were going to go in a 6n2 polo however after making a point about the polo not being able to hold two bags of shopping yet alone 5 peoples luggage we've decided it would be more sensible and maybe more fun to buy a cheapo mpv for the trip and sell it back on after.
Point being none of us know much about mpvs with the only two I know of being the Nissan Serena which blew a hole out the side of the block and a Chrysler voyager which has just been none stop engine and interior problems.

Our budget is tight we could get together about £500 with the hopes of getting most of that back, so what would you suggest are they all much a likeness or what and does anyone know of a mpv that up for sale that's in working condition and tax and tested to at least after July

Mitsubishi space wagon...... One on ebay atm for £500.

a frend had one a fiew years ago and it took so much abuse. It died in a big way after 30.000 verry hard miles.

never changed the oil or even botherd topping the fluids up. Eventually it blew its self to bits.

holes in the block 2 pistons disappeared the head broke in 2 and theflywheel broke.

that's what happens wen it sits on the redline in 4th for 80 miles

old XUD 807 or 806 or what ever they are. atleast with a xud 90% of issues can be fixed at the road side with a basic tool kit

^ Not a bad shout, a fair few are used by taxi drivers too so should come up cheap with massive mileage

my mate just bought a 406 2.0HDI for £600 with T&T. Brilliant condition and Ready to go and with a remap itll be a bit of fun!

Good shout on the 806, dont get a picasso, never known a car so universally abused and full of issues. Except for renault lagunas - actual worst car ever lol.

We had a Vw sharan for 5 years covered over 60k in it, was a brilliant car/van 40mpg easy on a run

We used to have a Toyota Estima(emina/lucida) so many names I don't know what they mean haha
But they have space for 6in the back (the two rear benches can be fixed and spun 180 and fixed so they face each other
The front seats are pilots seats so they can spin around
It had sooo much space and quite a lot of toys too :-)

Exactly what I was going to suggest... Mum had one for years (Lucida) and it was epic, one of the best cars I've known. Plus, the amount of stuff they swallow up is amazing!

Our one came modified for some reason... AMG style wheels, Jap can which made it the loudest diesel I have EVER heard and low as it could get. Scraped everywhere until it got standardised

806 is a good shout or a Citroen berlingo has 5 seats and a huge boot. My mum's berlingo was awesome.

Another +1 for the lucida. My brother in law had the import 4x4. It was great, even being 20 years old everything worked, even the air con! Lol

Only downside to them is they are quite thirsty on juice around town. I borrowed it for nearly a month after the hg blew on my xrdt and the best I ever got was 30mpg.

I'd go for an old minibus for such a long trip, LDV Pilots and Convoys are well cheap, tough, simple, and have waaaay more room than any MPV...

Vw sharan/ ford galaxy with the 2.8 corrado vr6 engine. Sold our to buy the 306 and wish i hadn't now.

stupidly fast with a beautiful noise.

or a Kia sedona diesel. Cant remember the engine size but the highest diesel is mint. Sounds like a tractor but goes like stink.

both auto and fast. The vr6 vw/ford thing is the best.

I'd go for an old minibus for such a long trip, LDV Pilots and Convoys are well cheap, tough, simple, and have waaaay more room than any MPV...

But cost a bomb to run and are back breakingly painful to drive cos of the crappy seats..

I'd personally get an old DERV estate, plenty of room, cheaper to fuel than an MPV, and possibly more readily available.

trust me it ain't to bad on fuel. Motorway your gunna get 30mpg ish at 90mph. Found out myself on the way to Cornwall fully loaded with 4kids n the missus and luggage on the roof.

xud reliablilty and 8 seats can be bought taxed and tested for under £400 thesedays

Not really that dear to run mate, I used to borrow my mates Convoy with the 2.5 turbo transit engine and it did around 40mpg on a run loaded up, and it likes veg, the seats are shocking though...

Kinda agree with liam on an ldv. Just take out a row of seats for epic space and keep it legal. Also the pilot has an xud lump. Still think id go for the convoy though. They aren't that terrible to drive.

Oh, forgot to mention before - you remember me telling you about that time we were strip-searched? That was on the way into france with a bunch of under 25s in a people carrier on the way to a beach resort - turns out french customs aren't daft lol.

Tried suggesting the 806 and got the standard French car response "no it'll be unreliable" & "lol trust you to suggest a Peugeot"
Looking about the jap one do seem bigger and more roomy, we are considering the Volvos now but last night one of the group decided he's going to sell his fiesta and buy whatever we get off us after the trip so I guess the ball is more in his park about what we decide to get.
Anyone with any thoughts on the zaferia? I know it's Vauxhell but they do come about pretty cheap.

p.s haha @ poodle but not afraid of no strip search, if anything it'll add to the holiday fun
