Diesel knock
#1
Hi, found it thanks.
Ok - bought a Y reg 306 1.9 diesel (non turbo) knowing it had a slight diesel knock. Put a new cam belt on it thinking it may have jumped a tooth but still the same. Went to a diesel specialist who advised me to put a new pump sender unit on it so did and still the same. Don't know if this is related to the problem but the glowplug light has stopped working still starts fine but the battery drains flat overnight, Ive replaced the glowplug relay but still the same. Also changed the fuel filter. If you unplug the crank sensor the knock goes away but it smokes a bit. The car only smokes a little on start up and the engine pulls like a train so I think the pump is ok but either the timing is out or there's an electrical problem. Any suggestions ? Cheers Ash.

they are a bit knocky lol . . . . you sure it's overly loud? . . .
Phase 1 D-Turdo, K14@24 psi, De-cat, meaty backbox, Bosch pump, grinded LDA pin, duel air fed K&N =133.7bhp & 188ft/lbs

Hi, yes it's running a bit lumpy and it is an injector knock. I used to drive wagons and have had the odd injector pack up and sounds just the same. When I unplug the crank sensor it runs quiet so must be the timing or something electrical.

Hi Tom, It's the sensor on the gearbox but the garage refered to it as the crank sensor. Cheers Ash.

Hi Cully,
Yes think you're right. Why did they cock up a bomb proof diesel engine by adding electronics?

Sorry I forgot to mention that the engine management light is also on.

things to check
coolant temp sensor,
MAF
Crank position sensor
Vehicle speed sensor

it might be worth you finding someone local with peugeot planet diag software and get the ecu codes read

you may have a more serious problem though!
the pump advance the glow plug relay and the glowplug light is controlled by the ecu!
it is not uncommon for ecu's to go faulty and drain batterys over night but still run

Hi Cully, thanks for your reply. I thought about the ecu and even found one on ebay for £36 but then realised I would have to have a full re-code done and don't know what this may cost. I'm doing it for my daughter and she doesn't have a lot of money to throw at it but we've already had the cam belt done and the new pump sensor (£107) and road tax so may be worth spending a bit more as the rest of the car is tidy and engine really pulls well. Or do I shove it on ebay and cut & run ?

according to auto data there is a know problem with the coolant temp sensor that tracts coolant to the ECM!
