Hunting for a new car...
#1
Hi all,
I'm a Land Rover man usually, I currently have a 1977 Series 3 and a 1994 Disco 300tdi, but running two has got too much for me!

The Disco is going to be sold, and I wanted something that would drink veg oil and tow my trailer tent in a bit more comfort than a rattly old series 3, while also being cheap to run. An XUD based 306 was my first thought! Costs about half as much as the Disco to insure for a start.

Went to look at one locally today and I'm happy it's what I want, but the one I saw was crap. Dented everywhere, the doors didn't lock (everything locked and then unlocked straight away, couldn't get all of the doors to lock at all) and the radiator had a hole in it, didn't fancy paying 500 notes for it! Was an M-reg on 90 odd thousand miles.

Hopefully I'll find something soon and look forward to finding out more from this site!

Cheers
Sam

Welcome to the club Smile you'll be looking for an xud with a Bosch pump fitted, as that's better able to cope with the veg oil. You can run it on a local but it's a bit of a gamble as to when it will break. Take a look around and join in the banter and you'll have 10 posts in no time and will be able to post in the sale sections and use the pm system.

Spent all night looking for more, gonna have a ride round tomorrow

Maybe I'm wrong but from what I've found

Phase 1 turbo diesels are bosch pump
Phase 2 turbo diesels are either bosch or lucas, mainly lucas Sad

Phase 1 & 2 non turbo diesels are either bosch or lucas

Phase 3 are HDI and no good for veg

Will keep you posted. I might even end up with an estate, i've got a strange obsession with estates. Used to have an escort estate that I did up to look quite nice in the end

Welcome aboard.

As you seem to have already discovered, if you want to run veg you're best off looking at the older cars, or a later one that has already been converted. Although don't be put off completely by a Lucas car, as it's a pretty easy, cheap and common swap Smile

Welcome along, seems you've figured out what you need, but don't get too hung up on finding one with a Bosch fitted, if the car's cheap, get it anyway. The conversion's cheap enough, and you'll want to do the cambelt anyway which is half the job!

Oh, and Estates are FTW! Big Grin

Welcome! The only advice i can offer is that Bosch pumped cars are alot rarer than lucas ones! I could hardly find any bosch pumped ones atall Smile

Did you know, Lucas pumped cars are often cheaper. Also more common to find. The conversion's easy too!

You should probably just get one with a Lucas, much easier to find, then do the conversion, it's easy enough to do and cheap

How hard or expensive is it to get hold of the bits though?
I'm yet to see a ph1 estate for sale anywhere and everything ph2 is Lucas, it looks like its either a ph1 hatchback or an estate that ill have to do the conversion on. Either way should be ok as long as I'm agreed on what I'm looking for!
I did see the one in the for sale section, ill bear it in mind but you're a long long way from me Sad

Still learning! lol

Looks like it'll be a phase 2 estate then, seen a couple of decent looking ones, and looks like I'm on the hunt for a bosch pump at some point. Knowing me I'll end up going all out and finding a 2.1 instead....the other half has one of those bright pink vitaras and a long term plan is for that to have an XUD in it so it wouldn't go wasted. hmm..... Undecided Idea

Looks like you lot are gonna be stuck with me for a bit then...

Got myself a dark blue estate, D turbo, 1998. Picking it up over the weekend

It'll end up going the same way as my old Escort above, which was a great car until I slid it on the ice and wrecked it. Already looking out for half leather interiors, bosch pumps, etc!
