Why the hell do we call them all 3 and 5 doors???
Occurred to me today in a daydreamy moment...
3 or 5 door evokes the idea you use the extra door (or boot) to enter the vehicle...
Really cant remember the last time I used the boot to get my passengers in...
and in saloons you can't get in the cabin from the boot...so why the 3rd or 5th door?!
Anyone got any thoughts?! I know sometimes they are referred to as 2 and 4 door...but its not as common as the 3 and 5 dr.
And if we are going for ways to enter, then I have a 6 door, coz I gota sunroof!!!
Or if its just openings to the car in general, then why dont we count the bonnet?!
where did it all start?!

A salloon is a 4 door for a start. A saloon style car with a hatch is still a hatchback.
Also I frequently enter through the tailgate to get stuff from the far end off the luggage space.

Thats because your short. I can reach stuff from the front of a artic without getting in past the doors.

A door is classed as anything with a window in it iirc. You can still get a 5-door Mondeo (saloon) for example it will just have the bootlid hinged from the roof rather than from the bottom of the rear window/c-pillar...
3-doors look the best though, especially on a 306. Fake fuel caps ftw.
Disclaimer: The above is not to be taken to heart and is probably a joke, grow up you big girl.

so a sunroof counts...win! I have a 6 door
3 door/2 door is pointless unless you dont have rear seats IMO

It differentiates between a Hatchback or Saloon.
A 306 will be 3 or 5 door, a 306 sedan will be a 4dr, my 405 is a 4dr.

That's still a 5 door hatchback though...a saloon has a wank little boot that hinges under the window and isn't big enough for a weeks shopping...
Alternatively called a 'liftback' if Japanese...

Family editions are pointless unless you have a family... practicality is for when you're old and boring. Or Toms306
It is true, you can get a 5 and 4 door Mondeo, same with a Vectra etc

PS, Tom, saloon boots are better than hatch boots. You have about another foot of bootspace. Just obviously you cant fit bigger objects in/fold down seats very much/well. And dare i say, i prefer my saloon boot for bass

Nope, luggage space is longer and higher with the seats down in a hatch, you don't have that option with a boot. My mate had a view when I had the golf, I had all 4 wheels in my hatch boot, he could only fit 2 in the Nora boot due to the way its setup.

A 'boot' isn't a door. A tailgate is.

...in that case...
why is a tailgate a door?!
Is it not a gate?!
I dont open the garden door and go down a garden road...
I open a gate and go down a path

No, I just wondered if it was something we adopted from america...
But then I realised that bonnets are hoods over there and boots are trunks...
just got me thinking thats all...seems silly to me...i have a car with 4 doors, a sunroof and a boothatch...so I think thats 6 door...or was it 5?

Can you get anything in or out of the sun roof in normal use? Nope, so its not a door.

If it has a window and is hinged, it's a door....technically.

Imo a sunroof is a window rather than a door....
A piece of glass with a rubber surround, no handle and either a motor or wonder to operate....how many other doors are like that?
