Losing enthusiasm

Tom, if you have to spin the wheels to pull onto a roundabout quickly before you cut someone up, it's obviously not clear for you to pull out and you're just being impatient.

The first part of your rant suggests that you have the most powerful HDi known throughout the forum, as mine doesn't 'spin up in 2nd' unless I'm being really careless in the wet, even then you have to be very ham-fisted with it. The HDi does have lag, but when it comes on boost it's predictable, you make it sound like a 1,000bhp Toyota Supra or something, which would be a handful. A 10 year-old French station wagon is not unpredictable unless it's broken.

Then you go on to say it's slow. Too slow in fact to react to your poor judgement / lane discipline on a dual carriageway. Perhaps your ECU is knackered, as it offers you 1,000bhp in the first 3 gears but only 10bhp in the last two.

Sorry Tom, you're spouting bullshit again.

To get the thread away from Tom before MPG comes up, I may have just PM'ed someone about another car and checked with my insurers ninja

Well I can only assume you have some damn good tyres then? Its nothing to do with lots of bhp at all, I had the same problem in the 1.8, its to do with the fact that one wheel spins far too easily and without the LSD effect from ESP that one slipping wheel stops you making progress.

Just LOL Tom.

You don't need an LSD with less than ~200bhp going through the front wheels. ESP doesn't emulate an LSD in any way either, in fact it would just slow you down.

But please carry on, this is entertaining....lol

No actually....you're wrong!

The diff sends the power to the easiest wheel...the one thats slipping on water/ice/mud, what an excellenct system.

ESP brakes that wheel - the diff sends the power to the other wheel which is now easier to turn....but thats the one with grip...hence no spinning and gets you going. LSD effect. And yes it is extremely helpful, regarless of power or lack of it.

Yes it reduces power as well, but really not much. In a previous car which you're probably aware of, turning the ESP off on a wet road made launches MUCH slower as you couldn't power down, but its usually just one wheel slipping which is where ESP does come in really handy.

If you're being a knob and manage to spin both wheels at the same time I agree it wont be much help, but how often does that realistically happen? Even with 360ishNm of torque I didn't do that unless I tried to....but then the clutch wasn't keen on that tbh.

Its all part of the same system.

I had ASR (anti-slip regulation) on one golf and ESP (electronic stability control) on the other. Both have traction control, but the ESP covers rear wheels as well (under or over steer) as you say.

Reading from your posts about your driving I think you need as many aids as possible. Perhaps stabilisers too, for especially tight corners.

ESP is just a posh name for TC. It's the same damn thing.

Also, don't call me wrong on the internet. It hurts my fingertips.

Now.

ESP is a safety device. In no way is traction control 'sporty', ever.

Whereas an LSD aids in that it can distribute more power better whilst cornering.

LSD = Good, allows you to get on the power quicker through corners. Pretty much pointless most of the time on the road, though.

ESP = Bad. It's basically a Nanny to look after you when you're enthusiastic attempts at driving upset the car sufficiently for the system to think you have no idea what you're doing, so it intervenes.

It's not a difficult concept, but it does sound like you need a nanny rather than a limited slip differential.

HTH Smile

Toyo are shit tyres end of, but a good tyre and you'll realise how disillusioned you've been made to think they were ever good. Buy some decent f*cking tyres. My Michelins don't have that problem.

Tyres are one thing i'll never ever skimp on.

Wheel spin in a front wheel drive car will nearly always be because of crap tyres not cause of amazing power!
My rain experts never spin but my old nankang ditch finders span on tap in the wet, and this is a 1.4!!

in regards to the topic, i used to love fixing my old morris and il tried modding my polo but as soon as i got the pug i looked at all the complicated systems and plastics everywhere and lost interest, even gave up changing a foglight bulb after a control arm nut rounded and pissed me off.
Cant be arsed to spend money on modding either as im saving for uni, looks like its going to get quite dull after a while but it handles quite nicely so il get over it.

tom any car will have a hissy fit with the state of the road have been with all the snow. mine was a little spinny on some of the roads that were bad. my rover was the same too.
but if your wheel spinning from the arounderabouts, then you need to take five mins, as there isnt any need for it.
anyway liam what you getting next another audi? my pals just reverted back to an audi and bought a A3 1.8 T.

No mate, I'm not definitely selling the DT but there's something I'm thinking about dependent on price...

If I was gonna have an Audi again it'd be another pre-A series car, like a 5 cylinder 90 or Coupe, I'd never have a newer VAG car again after the Skoda lol

Tom i completely fail to understand how you can moan about an Hdi in the wet because it doesn't have traction control. I managed to get my gti6 home down 17miles of backroads in about 6inches of snow on PARADA SPEC 2S without one single incident. I didn't wheelspin (unless I wanted to ninja ), skid, or require the car to brake a wheel/cut the power/interfere in any way.

You've not just love the love for modifying, you've lost the love for everything by the sounds of it. There are cars you love, cars you like, and cars you just drive. How you can actually hate a car is totally beyond me. I ADORED my old 106 nad. I adored my old citroen zx even though it left me on the side of the road after shitting a driveshaft. I actually cried (a single manly tear) when Phil drove my dt down the road after buying it. I can't describe how upest I was at binning the '6. The new one is annoying me at the moment cause it has an ovalled hub, bent lower strut brace which rubs on the sump, I need to sort out the engine loom to fix my map sensor, My airbag light flashes, I've not had a chance to clean it for months, but I still love it to bits. By comparison, I dont particularly 'like' the gf's car. But it still managed to put a small grin on my face when I put a couple of bags of shingle in the boot; balanced the handling right out!! On a serious note about that car; it didn't matter if I enjoyed it as it was just a set of wheels to get me to and from work. I don't understand how someone can dislike a car?

anyway, rant over; I've been getting a bit down about mine of late, it's just horrible working on cars when you have to drive it to work the next day, and with it being dark when I get home dark when I leave for work it's not the biggest motivator. I have however been stockpiling parts, hopefully to fit some weekend after next (at least the new wishbone/hub, and hopefully wiring loom), and then the rest when I get more motivation. I literally cannot WAIT for it to get warmer and sunnier again though. GAD it's been fairly sunny all day and I already feel happier and am looking forward to getting outside more!

Weather's total shit here today, by the time I built up some motivation to go swap the bumpers it was f*cking hailing. Thing is, I'm not lazy, instead of doing the car I went and put a bit more work into the bathroom. Maybe I'm spending too much energy working overtime and doing up the house....

I need to build a heated workshop lol

If you're spinning the wheels so easy with approx 110-120bhp then its either crap driving or shitty tires.
My stage 1 hdi wouldnt spin up unless i wanted to but as soon as i got a budget replacement front tire as a temp fix untill i got some good rubber and would spin like f*ck

Only time mine ever span with 17"s is when I'm at the traffic lights half way up a steep hill. But even them has to be very wet.

Ridiculous, or hilarious?

I always engage "Maximum Attack" when driving in the wet, surprisingly the car seems much worse and scenery is much scarier. Therefore 306s are rubbish.

To be fair, it's not a ridiculous thread, it was just hijacked by another pointless, boring, Toms306 vs C.A.R argument.

Ha ha ha if you don't have the ability to pull away quickly in the wet without lighting the wheels up then you got problems with your driving, can you not feel the breakaway point? If you can't then catch the bus!! I can do it in mine with Prada spec 2's on so you are doing something wrong

The way my life is right now, I've lost all enthusiasm to modify cars and everything to do with cars.

I have so much love for the XUD engine but having a baby on the way has made me realize I'm proving nothing by making a big boosted one like I wanted to a few months back.
