Steering Rack Conversion
#1
Has anyone done one of these? Using a xsara vts rack either phase one or two.

I know the phase two one is 2.6 lock to lock and the phase one is 2.2 lock to lock.

I am just interested in what difficulties people came across, I have looked on the 6 forum, and some people say its a straight swap and others say its not. depending on the phases of the 6.

My problem is I dont own a 6, my car in theory is a phase 1 car, but even when I bought it was a mix of phase 1 and 2 parts.

Any clues will be great.

It really depends how the power steering pipes connect to the rack, some screw in and some are clamped in. Don't know if the 306/xsara varied its connections, but i remember doing a partner van once (so basically a 306) and this was the case

Yea I have seen some vary on the connection side of things. I want to get everything before we start as most places close early on a saturday.

Why would you want too? Is there any benefit from it?

Have you or Darren done one mark? Or are you speaking from a experience based on other cars with them?

I drove a 6 and the have a terrible turning circle and so many turns lock to lock.

Ahhh fair enough, tbh I didn't even think about turns to lock lol. Good idea though Smile

I would say you need the rack first, then new lines if the connections are different

I have just bought a smaller steering wheel and thought it would go well with a quick rack

it will make the steering heavier though.. potentially less control on bumpy back roads.

Meh changing the rack dosnt take long at all tbh, just case of popping hoses off / tre's and dropping the subframe, and by sounds of it provided you just keep your exsisting gti6 ram, there wont be any hose / bumpstop issues...

This wouldn't change the turning circle of a 6 though...

Make sure the handbrake works and you quite easily solve the lack of a right hand lock Wink. And no as Scott said it wont change how much lock you achieve, just how quickly it gets there.

Yeah I know lol, all I was saying is that if you fit a smaller steering wheel, reducing the leverage you have, then fit a faster steering rack, you're less likely to be able to hang onto the wheel when hooning on back roads.

Obviously I don't know how much heavier the steering will be, it might not make that much difference...

Wont be bad at all tbh, I personally like a firm steering feel anyways. non pas ftw in terms of driving feel.

I did a swap from a 1.8 to a gti6 rack and it was a straight swap for mine. Shocking lock however on right handers i used to have to do a 3 point turn when crossing the middle of a duel carriageway where my grandma lives

I know it wont change the turning circle, I was just commenting on how bad it was.

But it will change the number of turns lock to lock.

I have spoken to a few people with smaller steering wheels and they have said it made it more responsive and a bit easier.

You can get those steering columb gearbox things also, which gear up the input speed, to make for chronic short turn area, drifting win.

O and for anybody fitting a 6 rack to a derv, change the bloody ram over to a Derv on because you dont have a 6 speed box so dont need the shortened right hand lock to stop the wheel hitting the gearbox.

Isnt it just a bump stop on the steering ram anyway?

Im not 100% sure mate have never had one off i will be honest! I just know that somthing in the ram stops it. And if you put a xsara rack on a 6 you swap the ram onto it!

I was talking to a guy that runs a 205 rally car and he said if he did it all again he would get a non-pas rack and buy the pinion from quaife and then install a column assisted power steering system as employed on a lot of modern cars!
