Steering Rack Conversion - Pompey306mark - 29-04-2012 Has anyone done one of these? Using a xsara vts rack either phase one or two. I know the phase two one is 2.6 lock to lock and the phase one is 2.2 lock to lock. I am just interested in what difficulties people came across, I have looked on the 6 forum, and some people say its a straight swap and others say its not. depending on the phases of the 6. My problem is I dont own a 6, my car in theory is a phase 1 car, but even when I bought it was a mix of phase 1 and 2 parts. Any clues will be great. Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Connor - 29-04-2012 It really depends how the power steering pipes connect to the rack, some screw in and some are clamped in. Don't know if the 306/xsara varied its connections, but i remember doing a partner van once (so basically a 306) and this was the case Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Pompey306mark - 29-04-2012 Yea I have seen some vary on the connection side of things. I want to get everything before we start as most places close early on a saturday. Steering Rack Conversion - Matt - 29-04-2012 Why would you want too? Is there any benefit from it? Re: Steering Rack Conversion - darrenjlobb - 29-04-2012 Less turns lock to lock = win Re: Steering Rack Conversion - mark_airey - 29-04-2012 ^^ this, quick steering racks are awesome! Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Pompey306mark - 29-04-2012 Have you or Darren done one mark? Or are you speaking from a experience based on other cars with them? I drove a 6 and the have a terrible turning circle and so many turns lock to lock. Steering Rack Conversion - Matt - 29-04-2012 Ahhh fair enough, tbh I didn't even think about turns to lock lol. Good idea though Re: Steering Rack Conversion - ginge191 - 29-04-2012 i get my arm exercise from steering a pug, reducing this would just give me bingo-wings :| Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Connor - 29-04-2012 I would say you need the rack first, then new lines if the connections are different Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Pompey306mark - 29-04-2012 I have just bought a smaller steering wheel and thought it would go well with a quick rack Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Jonny81191 - 29-04-2012 it will make the steering heavier though.. potentially less control on bumpy back roads. Re: Steering Rack Conversion - darrenjlobb - 29-04-2012 Jonny81191 Wrote:it will make the steering heavier though.. Man up? Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Ed Doe - 29-04-2012 http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=99460 Sounds like a lovely job..... Re: Steering Rack Conversion - darrenjlobb - 29-04-2012 Meh changing the rack dosnt take long at all tbh, just case of popping hoses off / tre's and dropping the subframe, and by sounds of it provided you just keep your exsisting gti6 ram, there wont be any hose / bumpstop issues... Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Atterz - 29-04-2012 But Mark should be alrite as he should only have 5 gears . Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Scott - 29-04-2012 Pompey306mark Wrote:I drove a 6 and the have a terrible turning circle and so many turns lock to lock. This wouldn't change the turning circle of a 6 though... Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Atterz - 29-04-2012 Make sure the handbrake works and you quite easily solve the lack of a right hand lock . And no as Scott said it wont change how much lock you achieve, just how quickly it gets there. Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Jonny81191 - 29-04-2012 darrenjlobb Wrote:Jonny81191 Wrote:it will make the steering heavier though.. Yeah I know lol, all I was saying is that if you fit a smaller steering wheel, reducing the leverage you have, then fit a faster steering rack, you're less likely to be able to hang onto the wheel when hooning on back roads. Obviously I don't know how much heavier the steering will be, it might not make that much difference... Re: Steering Rack Conversion - darrenjlobb - 29-04-2012 Wont be bad at all tbh, I personally like a firm steering feel anyways. non pas ftw in terms of driving feel. Re: Steering Rack Conversion - HDIkyle - 29-04-2012 I did a swap from a 1.8 to a gti6 rack and it was a straight swap for mine. Shocking lock however on right handers i used to have to do a 3 point turn when crossing the middle of a duel carriageway where my grandma lives Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Pompey306mark - 29-04-2012 I know it wont change the turning circle, I was just commenting on how bad it was. But it will change the number of turns lock to lock. I have spoken to a few people with smaller steering wheels and they have said it made it more responsive and a bit easier. Re: Steering Rack Conversion - lewisdmz - 29-04-2012 How noticeable would .4 really be? Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Pompey306mark - 29-04-2012 Seems most of the 6 members who have done it have found it good and noticable. Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Atterz - 29-04-2012 Its massive. Honestly! Re: Steering Rack Conversion - darrenjlobb - 29-04-2012 I can see it being a nice upgrade myself.... Re: Steering Rack Conversion - darrenjlobb - 29-04-2012 You can get those steering columb gearbox things also, which gear up the input speed, to make for chronic short turn area, drifting win. Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Atterz - 29-04-2012 O and for anybody fitting a 6 rack to a derv, change the bloody ram over to a Derv on because you dont have a 6 speed box so dont need the shortened right hand lock to stop the wheel hitting the gearbox. Re: Steering Rack Conversion - darrenjlobb - 29-04-2012 Isnt it just a bump stop on the steering ram anyway? Re: Steering Rack Conversion - Atterz - 29-04-2012 Im not 100% sure mate have never had one off i will be honest! I just know that somthing in the ram stops it. And if you put a xsara rack on a 6 you swap the ram onto it! I was talking to a guy that runs a 205 rally car and he said if he did it all again he would get a non-pas rack and buy the pinion from quaife and then install a column assisted power steering system as employed on a lot of modern cars! |
