EDIT
Are we talking about taper THROUGH the wrist pin bush? or vertical taper from bottom to top of small end in terms of thickness?

Is this the taper you are talking about?
If so, alot of conrods have this, so cant see why it would be an issue? Unless your talking about very small taper through the bearing its self?

A little bit more transparency wouldn't go a miss

Transparency?? How can I give any more?
See my last few updates, telling you we may have a problem, telling you the designs are done and telling you we are now waiting for them to be made. I can't give you any more information because I simply don't have any.
As I said before, from the date of the last person getting on board and us signing off the drawings it would be 6 weeks.
If anyone wants to talk to me directly about this, my number is 07759159321 but like I say - I have no more information to give you at the moment.

It has to be tapered to oppose the cylinder pressures.

Right folks.... I have an update for you, but unfortunately it's bad news.
Turns out, the little end taper has caused us a problem.
Basically, the short version is while they can definitely make the H beam rods how we want them, because of the very "specialist" taper as they put it, they need to invest in some new forgings to do it correctly. Unfortunately, this means we have two options.
Either:
1) We decide to pay the £645 a set the rods will now cost - so that gives £405 balance to pay.
2) We give up and I send you your deposits back.
Sorry for this guys - but it's sort of out of my hands here... The choice chaps, is yours.
Cheers,
JP

Hmm.....
Dont mean to intrude, but tbh cant understand how its causing them an issue, tonnes of stock rods have this taper...Sounds like a bunch of ammerturs to me... Not sure why it would effect the forging process, as the tape is surely machined afterwards? maybe possible to leave as is, and have another company finish the machining if these guys cant manage it?
And for the reference, mine only cost 700 buying as a one off...and they have taper / made to top quality standard, so Id probs tell them to man up for a group buy of this scale!

I'm trying to be as transparent as I can here, and I can only go on what I've been told but yeah... basically the taper is very steep compared to others they forge so new tooling is required... I'll take your advice about the other company doing the latter work.
I know this is a total b1tch, but unfortunately that's just how it is.
I've been battling over the course of the weekend with them to change their minds / re-evaluate but not getting very far.
It's still over a £50 saving, as that £645 includes carriage but even so is it worth our hassle? I need your input on that chaps.

Well obviously 650 is still better than 700, but surely for the amount of people buying them, a better price must be able achievable... what about contacting another forgery? Why not get in contact with the people that did darrens? They can obviously make them no bother and with 15 orders important sure they can do better than 650

Can they not modify it to a "normal" tapper so that it will still work? One low compression set out of the question?

Daniel,
I asked about a taper that would work, and they said because of the taper in the pistons it has to be the same otherwise the rod will actually be WEAKER than a stock one as the taper is there specifically to react the downward force.
Connor,
That's my next move - the guys who did Darrens haven't been open today) but I'll be on the blower to them tomorrow to try and sort something out.
I would be VERY surprised if they came in anywhere near £450 a set though, as I've tried them before for myself!
We need to be realistic hat this could come in at like £550 - £600.

Yeah im not expecting stupidly cheap, but if you could get it down to 500, then that's better, could even bounce them off each other, see if that helps bump the price down

JP, if you go with another forgery I guess there will be chance for others to join in on the group buy and perhaps get the price down more?
I would like a set but wouldn't have a deposit until after Easter realistically

I would like a set but wouldn't have a deposit until after Easter realistically I can see people potentially dropping out, so you might be able to take someones place

Yeah, it would be price depending obviously For the sake of £50 off I wouldn't be interested but if it comes down to a similar amount to before I would want in

Right,
Spoke to Farndon Engineering on many occasions now (the place who made Darrens) and the cheapest we can get is as stated - they just will NOT budge.
Need to start a list of who's interested at the £645.

Doubt they will come with bearings unless JP has done some kinda deal, but will come with genuine ARP bolts and little end push pre fitted.

Darren's right. They will just take a stock set of XUD or HDi bearings. Will have little end bush and genuine ARP rod bolts.

Yes. What I more meant is that the HDi crank and XUD crank are the same so we can just use the XUD bearings on a HDi lump...
