Uneven rear tyre wear

Hi all,

Car passed the MOT today (yay) with an advisory on the rear near side tyre being worn on the inner edge.

The guy at the garage said it could be a dodgy shock or the beam failing. I really hope it's the shock!

Is there anyway I can check before replacing parts? Or anyone had this before?

Unfortunately, it is likely to be the beam failing I'd imagine. How many miles does the car have?

Bear in mind most 306's are around 20 years old now (give or take).

This pic is the rear beam on a Rallye I picked up maybe 4 years ago when the car was approx 16 years old.



So much camber it had worn through the arch liner and was rubbing on the inner arch of the car. Start by having a good look at your wheel in the side where uneven wear is occuring. See if you can see any camber in the wheel like this (I doubt it would be as severe as this). Jack it up and grab the wheel and give it a wiggle and see if you can feel any play in the trailing arm. If you've either, or both, it's likely your beam needs a bit of love..

It's done about 160k now and is 22 years old..

The camber looks no where near as bad as in that photo! I haven't really noticed any at all to be honest. I haven't heard any knocking or rubbing either.

I'll jack it up and give it a good wobble then and I'll go from there. Do all 306s have the same rear beam?

I agree with Ben. It's most likely the rear beam.  Can't quite imagine how a shock could cause tire wear characteristic of excessive camber.  This was mine.

   

Doesn't look nearly as bad as the Rallye Ben showed you but even so the drivers side turned out to be totally f***ed.  No creaking or banging as a forewarning.  More info in my thread here https://www.306oc.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?tid=35827

All 306 beams are similar but not the same. The size of the torsion & anti-roll bars varies between models . There's a thread somewhere listing the sizes. I'll see if I can find it.

The guy in the garage said a dodgy shock could be casing a the wheel to bounce when driving causing the wear.. I can't feel anything like this when driving though!

I'm just bracing my self for this job at the moment, to get the car through the MOT I have changed: front discs, track rods & ends, new front tyre, new rear pads and discs and a new caliper (leaking) and steel brake pipe... So as you can imagine I've had enough of it at the moment.

Not too sure what I want to do with the car long term to be honest, I think I'll leave it 12 months and see what the MOT brings up next year! Maybe new car time. It gets used as a daily by the Mrs at the mo and is doing Bristol to just past Bath every day which is around 50 miles and has torn it a new arse hole!

At that age and mileage, if it's not already had a beam refurb, them I'm fairly certain it's going to need one I'm afraid. It's a good effort but it's likely done.

Id imagine it will need bearings and trailing arm shafts as a minimum, maybe mounts too. You will pretty much need to have the beam off the car to strip it so might as well replace the mounts whilst it's off.

I would recommend stefan golesworthy on facebook. he does 306 beams and the imaxles feedback over the years has been very suspect. Stefan is a long time member on here and knows what he is doing.

As others have said it will be the beam and not the shock

If you do decide to go down the budget route (exchange for IMAxles, which as Eeyore says, have had mixed reviews) then this member might be able to sort you out with fitting.  https://www.306oc.co.uk/forum/member.php...e&uid=1195  He's near Cirencester so relatively local & would probably do it in a day.  Also contactable via the 306OC facebook page.  (I'm assuming he's still working on 306's as he hasn't been active on the forum for a while).

Unfortunately another vote for beam, had the same thing with my estate. Had it rebuilt by Pug1Off last year.
