Also man the f*ck up and finish this 106 and get brakes and suspension sorted, learn to drive faster in a slow car and you'll be much faster in a fast car. You'll also have a load of shiny bits to swap onto the faster car so you don't just go straight into comedy suspension.

Yeah I was thinking of taking the test so if I really need to tow it myself then I can. What sort of price do you think I could get a GTi for? So just been looking and I can tow up to 3500kg on my licence. So my DT is about 1100kg - 106 would be about 850kg stripped and trailer would be about 400kg. So well with in the limit. Looks like I could tow it myself

No mate the gross weight of the trailer needs to be less than the max of what the 306 can tow (usually plated at about 100kg less than the vehicle weight).
Parkers says you can tow 1200kg http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/fa...993/14134/ Best thing you can do is get the 106 weighed at a public weighbridge or friendly scrap yard then you know exactly how much you have to play with Also remember that that 1200kg is the gross weight of the trailer (the weight of the trailer combined with the max weight it can carry) not the actual weight of trailer plus 106. You can get a new plate for the trailer making say a 2600kg trailer a 1200kg trailer though but this practice is slightly dubious.
You wouldn't want to tow a 106 on any sort of decent trailer behind a 306. It wouldn't be great. At all. And barely legal - just because it's plated doesn't mean it is safe. I tow all the time up to 3.3t behind a DMax but it's not happy beyond that even though it's plated for 3.5t
I've driven a lot of 106 and 306s. This talk of the 106 being more nimble is a bit bollocks, depends on how the 306 is setup. 205 with a gti6 lump would be better or Clio as Allen says. I wanted a strong car in case I crashed, I like the 306 more and I hate the 106 wheel arch intrusion.

Imagine it would be safer in a impact. See a lot more GTi6' around for a sensible price. Plus I have Avo coil overs I could put on it

Haven't driven a gti6 205, but knowing how my diesel handles the weight up front compared to the 1.6gti i'm inclined to call bollocks on that.

Buy a clio 172 for circa £600. buy cooksport springs and Cup shocks circa £200. Buy mk1 clio 15" wheels and R888 tyres and enjoy the grunt of a gti6 with the nimbleness of a 106.

Nope, completely disagree. 106s rust in the same place as 306s plus a host more places. Also I wouldn't buy something hoping it would be "like a GTi6" as they never are, ask lolsteve.

I feel qualified to judge as i have had multiples of all the cars in question. 306's rust in just as many places, Just ask anyone with a 5 door and no arch liners... A well fettled 172 is an extremely competitive track car and i think bang for buck you cant really go wrong. 306 gti6 power with 106 gti handling. I've not driven a 205 GTi6, but can't help to think that the extra weight takes away the 'chuckability' of the 205. The difference between my 306 1.4 and HDi is vast on this too. The 1.4 can literally be thrown about (Shame it's gutless), 4 wheel drifts a plenty. The HDi however cannot, very safe and predictable at a fast pace but you can really feel the lump of iron over the front wheels when really pushing on. I found the GTi6 similar and not really inspiring. I'd have neither the 106 (can't get on with the pedals or seating position) or 306, good call on the Clio. My son's Mums 172 was the closest thing I've driven to a 205 Mi16. Right laugh to rag the tits off.

Clios can be made very quick on track.
All cars mentioned in this thread are good and fun in their own way.

The Clio's have their own 750MC race series meaning that although there is loads of parts about there is very few cheap ones. They are less than 100kg lighter than a Rallye and IIRC have less torque. Also The 306GTi6 is 167bhp, the Clio is 172PS which is only 170bhp. There realy isn't much between them on paper and having never driven one that shape other than a 1.5DCi I wouldn't like to comment on the difference of driving them.
Matt 106s go in all the usual 306 places but also I have never seen a 306 rust massive fist size holes on the inner wings like every 106 I've owned does and I've never seen a 306 rust through on the seam between the floor and the bit that goes over the petrol tank for a starters. Also they rust through on the joins between the boot floor and the rear arches and TBH anywhere around there.

106 is not 300 kilos lighter than a 306 unless its stripped out, an 8 valve 1.9 205 keeps up with one easily, as would a well pedalled 1.6!
more torque in a 306 gti6 engine, plus more cogs, its pretty close really. oh yeah, no clios or 106's came past adam on Saturday, or civics
need a part number? http://public.servicebox.peugeot.com/ and http://service.citroen.com/ will sort you out.

I realise that while on paper they are mostly equal.. the clio has the edge on track, its simply a better chassis and the same poke as a gti6!
Im talking about the lighter of the lot here (ph1 172) Theres a track 172 on ebay just down the road from me for £300 thats a ph1. you will not go faster for £300. simple

For a daily/track I'd go gti6
for pure track I'd do 106/saxo even though I strugged with the pedals

Both the GTi6 and the 2.1 Estate were 1200kg and I'm pretty confident my previous 106 was only about 750kg on the plate in the boot. 1120-860=260kg, 1200-750= 450kg I don't think calling the difference 300kg is unfair for arguments sake.

on track at fcs the clios do reign supreme but even still auving looked at the engine bay I'd never want to work on one

Don't get me wrong, i LOVE my 306 hdi and wouldn't swap it for anything. However, exactly as Alan has said, you can really feel the weight up front in the corners. That said i suppose this is really all semantics since a big engine in a small fwd chassis is the very basis of our shared interest: the hot hatch.
I'd be interested to have a go in a track spec clio, the standard ones do have a good chassis, it's the rest that lets it down imo. Driving is a bit more numb and i don't like the seating position, all stuff that could be fixed with a healthy bout of modding mind.

I'm gonna go 106 GTi. Got a beam, sub frames and springs for it already. Plus I love them. Think I would always have that 'wish I got a GTi' moment when out on track.
I would feel more confident working on one as I've already worked on one before plus they are really simple. They seem to be pretty pricy at the moment but I've got no time limit so I'll just start saving
