I would, obviously in my useless opinion, say that going from a HDi 306 to a ford 1.8 is a rather big jump backwards!!

Its a jump that should never be made. It's less powerful, more noisy and somehow less economical than the equivalent petrol engine.

What do you know about my experience of them? I've serviced these, rebuilt these and have two friends with these motors in their cars which I maintain. Hateful old engine. Derived from the old enduraE 1970s 1.8. Maybe different in many ways...but still derived from that original old clattery bag of bolts! Wishes for more power...

My old man had the old variant 1.8D endura engine. Done over 100k in it, I remember before it went to the sky it had 201k on it and it still ran (typical ford tin worm). Those old engines needed a good battery on them to start
Darren had on in his field van, believe he seized it once or twice along with cooking it. Would happily jump in one today and drive it wherever.

More basic and rough than a xud imo Just cant see any plausable reason to buy one if I had the choice...esp over a hdi or xud Wishes for more power...

Out of interest, why the 1.8 not the 2.0? I know the 2.0 is based on an old HDi but don't let that put you off, its come on a long way since.
If I was buying again is probably have hone for the 2.0 tbh....

A 1.8TDCi is frankly less refined and more unreliable... The engine block itself is fine, but shame they put possibly one of the wankest commonrail systems on it which randomly shit injectors - and yes, I do know a few of these ACTUALLY happening. It's true that it is derived from the old Endura, but if we're going by that, Tom's 1.6 Focus is based upon a 106 nad engine and my Volvo is based upon a 1970s Indirect injection diesel... The RCZ-R 1.6 turbo engine is essentially based upon the engine out of a 205 Automatic if we're getting really technical Also I'll point out if you go and buy a Range Rover Evoque, they use an engine that is derived from the XUD.

My hatred of XUD's is founded on personal experience of working on them and owning several myself.
Most engines can be traced back a LONG way if being pedantic. Interested to hear more about the tdci injector problems though? genuine interest

My uncle in law has run the 1.8 tdci mark 1 focus for 150k and it's still all good. Considering having it off him tbh but he wants to much for it!
The mark 1 focus handles well as well I don't think you'll be disappointed mate. Let the haters hate CLUB RALLYE

I had a 1.8 tddi mk1 focus as a stop gap and although it wasnt amazing, it worked and did everything i asked.

TBF The TDDis are absolutely fine, agricultural as f*ck, couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, but reliable as sin.
The CR TDCis I've seen countless times have injector faults, same kinds of problems as the 2.0 camchain in the Mk3 Mondeo has.. They just seem to randomly stop working one day, I can only assume it's due to burnt coils or similar.

TDDI is reliable as anything but is completely no thrills!
Tbh i can live with having to replace a few injectors. cheers for the heads up though ruan

You can recode them with an ELM cable and free software though.
There is a bad batch of 1.8 injectors, so its more common on a certain year (which I cant remember off the top of my head!) but does seem to happen reasonably often - though not as often as DV6s popping turbos lol. Don't know if you're on FordOwnersClub.com but theres plenty of info over there.

All 1.8 TDCis have a DMF, and they're a weak point on that engine. None have a DPF, the engine was just dropped for the Mk3.
