The Naked Rallye with Blue Steels
#1
Been in or around 306s since 2006. Had a China Phase 2 DTurbo-S 2006-2008, it had a derv doctor stage 1 tune and wore diy painted gti skirts and diy painted black harriers. Was a beast and it got me to college and back, and then work and back for the first few years of my adult life. Had a Fabia vRS for a time after that, then a Citroen C2 VTS, then was back to a Phase 3 Black GTi-6 which I loved absolutely. It had a Bilstein B8s all round, Group N Engine mounts, 30mm Eibach Springs, a K'N and a full Magnex exhaust. I ran that for two years until swapping it in for a more modern, and horrid, Astra H 1.9 CDTi150.

So when I decided I wanted another 306 it was a difficult decision to decide which model I wanted. I'd had two GTIs (Had a Diablo as well) and an XUD so decided it had to be a Rallye. I'd gone through stranges about 5 or 6 years ago wanting a White One, mainly because of Ben's magazine feature from the .net years (Click Here) and then a red one. But as I've always strove for the highest spec / the rarest model I decided it had to be the Black Rallye. Only a 100 were ever made, and according to howmanyleft.com there's left than 50 left (That's included sorn'd vehicles) so exclusivity is almost guaranteed. (That is of course besides Dum Dum, MattRallye & INXS to name a few on here Blush )

To cut a long story short I have no intention of using my Black Rallye as a daily. There's too few of them left and I'm wanting to keep this as a very long term project (5-10 years) so wanna keep the miles off as much as possible.

Bought T436 CNH from Chris (BigBadBowen from gti6.com) after a long ol' trip "down south" where I'd arranged to view a couple in the same day. The second was a lot further south, a lot cheaper and not in as good a condition. So I plumped up some notes for Mr. Bowen's Rallye. I think I didn't get a bad deal considering the work that had gone into the car, it's had a 50k Xsara VTS engine, new Aux and cam belts. As well as new brakes, good tyres a few other bits and bobs including uprated engine mounts.

It was a horrid trip home. Bad traffic, torrential rain and following my Dad doing 50mph the entire way. But despite this the Rallye still made it fun!! The exhaust note is infectious and the handling so sharp. Every roundabout can be viewed as a challenge!

I'm an avid reader of other's project threads. In particular 306gti6.com has some of the very best GTi/Rallye themed threads, and I've in particular been inspired for the overall look by 7075sam's Black Rallye before he broke it for parts! And Braymond's "Rallye-R". These two cars represent some of the best Rallye's the scene has produced in the last few years and are definitely inspirations.

My take on the Rallye may not be one for the purists and my black/red theme was inspired by Daysgti6's old '6 from some years ago Click Here

But one thing I definitely want to get right is the underside and the general clean up of some 13,14 years of grim build up. For this hours of tedious work I blame Mik's Rallye and Coskev's who showed us all how these cars should look underneath.

So want to keep the thread up to date, and I'll edit the "contents" at the top as often as I can so people can quickly navigate to points of interest.

Plans are:
Overall I want the car to be a light track use / fast road weapon that I can enjoy. There's some cracking roads near where my parents live and it's one of the few places left in the country you can really enjoy a good car.
I've got winter 14/15 to prepare the car to a standard where I can show it for Summer 2015. Gonna be going to FCS, Pugfest, Trax etc this next year so hoping to go with one 306 club or another not in the car park!!!

Looks great dude you've bought at the right time too, petrol is still under £2 per litre and the rallye is a couple of years away from being a classic Smile

Looks a good buy mate. Where's the rust at?
I was also running scorpion back box with standard system, but now I have scorpion back box with straight through middle section... sounds like porn! Need to get hold of a cat to butcher up.

Is that setup loud? I've heard it sounds really good from several people.
I like good but I'm not a huge fan of loud.
This post is an artistic work of fiction and falsehood. Only a fool would take anything posted above as fact.

Just behind the front wheels where folk jack up the wrong place! Gonna get welding this week.

I'm wanting to run a decat setup, it's just such a job of changing the cat back in for MOT!

Also, random glory shot...

Im going to cut the cat open and weld a pipe in.
My emissions was really low on mot, sp may get away with no cat. So if box there its less work.

Small update. Going to Wales tomorrow with yippiekiyay (from 306gti6.com) tomorrow on a jaunt (He's got a white rallye, I've a black and a friend of his a red so should make for some good photo ops). The car had been cleaned prior to be buying it but wasn't up to my standards. So had a 4+ hour session on the old girl, don't think she'd been cleaned this rigorously in years! Forgot to take some before pics but I'm sure you can imagine it.

Started off with a standard triple wax, (twice), followed by a full T-Cut which removed 80% of the marks and surface scratches that littered the bodywork. Had some black T-Cut left over from my old Black GTi (Which I sold 3 years ago!). Then cleaned it down again with triple wax. Then came the polish. Then went around with some touch up paint (again left over from my black GTi), then full shampoo'd the interior. To be honest I can't believe it's come out as well as it did.

Few pics:

Can just see the Diablo peaking out of the garage in a couple of the pics.

The eagle eyed among you will have noticed the car is "naked" of it's Rallye decals. I've had my fresh set delivered today, was going to apply them this evening but ran out of daylight, but I'd taken the old moldy ones off before washing it. But they're going on tomorrow morning.

Also did a little dewipering earlier. Three reasons 1). Saving weight! 2). I made £10 selling the part on eBay and 3). I absolutely HATE rear wipers.

I'll tell you how these car days out always go. Firstly SWMBO isn't happy that 1). I'm out all day and 2). I'm "wasting" £60-70 worth of fuel, but hey ho. Dragged myself out of bed at 5am to get a good early start as our destination is Wales and I'm the furthest North and the furthest East. Met up with ndy (yippiekiyay) and entourage at some services near Redditch.

We both shared an understanding of the enormity of the journey ahead so wasted little time with pleasantries, tanked up and got underway immediately. Meeting Braymond's Rallye in person was a humbling event as the thing is beautiful, even better looking in person than any project thread, even an exceptionally photographed and well written as his can do justice.

It was also... much quicker than mine! After a quick stop in a town with a typically Welsh name where I tried and almost failed to fit into the very snug bucket seats in the White Rallye we met up with Kerry, owner of the Red Rallye. Whilst I'd never been hugely struck on Cherry, Kerry's is the best example of the colour I've seen (Well equal to Alee83's from .net) especially for paintwork brightness. The side skirts weren't even pink! :lol

We also met up with a few other South West/Welsh gents and lasses with a variety of vehicles from a Mk2 Escort RS, a Focus ST, and a Clio v6.

We then headed up to the Beacons. Amazing roads, barely any traffic. It was spectacular! We stopped for a photoshoot, enjoyed some RWD donuts from the Escort and then it was 5pm! With work looming the day after it was time to pack up and head home, but a great day out...

Very tidy looking car you've got there! Can't say I'm a fan of the red decals but as long as you're happy with them that's what matters. Were those pictures taken on or near the A4069?

Just to be different ;-) had the idea in my head for a while! Didn't think they'd go down too well but heyho!

It most certainly was my friend great driving road. Can't wait to go back. Gotta be careful tho a couple of the boys clipped stones and knackered their tyres!

Good stuff! I'm hopefully going to be up that way in a couple of weeks so I'm planning an early morning raid but I'll look out for stones

Should be getting some Yokohama's soon, fitted and hit with the lowering stick and sorted ;-) Won't have any of this done intime for the South Mids meet, the End of Season Expo or the Hereford Rolling Road tho haha, will be done by next show season though!

Still haven't got the steels on, think they won't break cover until next year now as the car's hibernation starts in a couple of weeks.

Anyway finally sourced a air conless black phase 2 dash centre fascia, a big thanks to gpm (from 306gti6.com) for coming across it by accident and helping me out!!

Besides that now, despite having reconnected it, the aerial to the radio doesn't work (But it was always in the plans to de-aerial the car anyway), and the connector's on the 12v were different so had to bodge splice them together it was quite easy.

Very pleased with it, never got why the entire interior was black then to have this stupid silver fascia. I get it on PH3s where there's different silvery bits all over the cabin but not a Rallye.

I wouldnt bother daerialing the car. Its a standard part and there is nothing to gain apart from the looks! Only a hundred of these were made so dont f*ck about with it too much.

Yeah likewise, I wouldn't bother removing it as they aren't exactly offensive to start with.

Ah i see what you mean now, yes that centre does look alot better in black Smile much more in keeping with the rallye style.

To echo the above, i would just put a shorter aerial on.. just like i already have Tongue

Cant wait to see what this pulls on the dyno sunday Smile

Cheers for the comments guys. *ignores and orders aerial hung off ebay*
Kidding... But I'll need to investigate why the radio won't tune when it did before. Any ideas on common faults?

Looking forward to rr too, I'm hoping for 170... Expecting 160. Anything in between Id be happy with. My old black gti made 169 on a 130k engine and an airbox/exhaust combo so that's my only comparison.

Thats at the wheel power though isn't it? They were 167 ATF out of the factory so i would estimate about 140-145ATW when brand new so that is a fair old loss!
Also, why has he stopped the run at about 6650? They rev to 7250!

Have you checked the cam timing?could be why s it's down on power.

Wat do you think of the ad08,thinking about getting a set for summer/trackdays.

They should rev it till the limiter or till the power is obviously dropping off, not plateauing like yours. Is it definitely in BHP and not KW as those figures are poor for a car that you appear to of thought was OK. 138kw is 185bhp

Yeah someone said it might be the cam timing. Not sure how I'd check that myself tho?

Yeah it's definitely bhp. In my mind that car drives fine same as the diablo '6 I just sold. But then again I've never really given either of them much of a hoon.

It's been suggested it's either the cam timing or lambda so gonna have to get it booked in @ a garage to have a look. Would a run of the mill garage know what they're looking for re: cam timing etc or is this a specialist thing?

Cam timing is easy to check your self. Belt cover off, pin up the cams and crank pulley and if all the pins drop in nicely, its timed correctly. If not, somethings not right!

Nice to meet you yesterday, shame on the power output on the rallye, but it is a very tidy example.
