xrdt - track day fun on a Budget

Welcome! Bought my ph1 xrdt last year as a nice cheap economical run around - which was going great - until I stumbled upon you lot and xud tuning! Had to get cambelt done and did a service before the following....

After a nosey under the bonnet and up from underneath I was pleased to see a Bosch pump and Garret T2 - happy days - so tweaked boost and bosch for 19 psi, minimal smoke off boost for starters.

Brakes were crap and tyres nearly shot so changed stnd 14" for 15" steelies, sprayed em hammerite black and added set of Toyo Proxes for road use. Sorted front brakes with refurbing some gti 6 calipers and new disks and pads.

Air filter next as the stock canister had all but rotted out. Opened out vents in the grill, added extra inlet for dual cold air feed to a Ram Air foam filter on modified oem intake pipe. To prevent heat soak I now have a home brew heat shield too.

Also I now have myself a new daily driver in the shape of a Mazda 323 1.5 for £350 so the pug is defo ear marked for budget track days/spare daily!

It's always like this with xuds. I'll keep it standard I wont.touch anything. A week later I'll just fuel it a bit more then you get the bug!!
I'm thinking about having a diesel track car always liked the idea.
Looks like a good little car will keep an eye on this one.

Cool stuff, I hope you do take it on track! I spent a fortune building an XUD track car and hit every problem in the book... the biggest problem you'll face is heat.

I had a custom radiator made up, fitted a 16 row oil cooler, big intercooler and decent cold air feed... and it only just stayed cool on track!

Watch the EGT's too...

JP & Tom - yeah heat is the issue I gather but not going for monster power and would still like to retain some level of reliability!

150-160bhp stripped and well set up should see me right - for a while....

Looks like you have some good plans

As others have said heat is the thing you need to overcome check the condition of the rad any corroded fins ect and 150hp is plenty to get it hot

Cheers Danny, Rad all good as new just before I bought it.

Intend to read up some on airflow, heat wraps and fan cooling etc. Any advice great appreciated and will be scanning a few project threads too..

Chucked original wiring back on for now - not the final location for relay box and I intend to wire a manual overide switch. Need to diagnose a fault 1st though as the fans have never worked!

Changed clock to include outside temp readout and wired the sensor to a long flying lead so I can move it around in the engine bay. I am using this to build up an idea of under bonnet temps vs engine temp, oil temp and mph with various ducting to influence airflow....

My first boosted 306 was an xtdt, has yours got the same grey cloth seats?

FYI, those bumpers are really easy to chop up to fit a bfo intercooler ;-)

I like the heatshield!
I'd be concerned about having a stiff ARB and stiff springs up front and no change to the rear.

Yeah get that rear setup sorted, gti beams aint expensive, and get the mounts welded up solid too

If you manage to get it close to 1ton, 150bhp should be plenty if you get aome track tyres

Just a little update and some handy info.....

My new fans didn't seem to be running so ran a 12v live to test them - all good.
Relays? - tested for switching as above - all good.

Buzzed through with dvm whilst shorting the rad switch pins 1 to 3 and found only mv at the relay low volts pins. Worked back though the loom as far as poss without tearing the whole bloody car to bits but couldn't find a short/break so ran a fresh live with 5A fuse in-line and bingo! works a treat.
Whilst I had my sparky head on wired a manual override fan switch for both on slow speed.

Operating temps......
Now I have my oil temp gauge and outside temp sensor wired on a long lead under bonnet I will start to post a few results for oil temp vs engine temp vs under bonnet temp in different positions at various speeds. May be helpful, may not but should at least show the optimum position for air filter. So, for starters....

oil engine speed (mph) under bonnet under bonnet pos.

95 80 40mph 24 behind drivers headlamp
80 75 50mph 22 engine side of my heat shield
85 75 50mph 12! in cold air intake filter side of heat shield
80 75 40mph 34 bulk head behind battery

A question, with a temp clock does the sensor just plug into the back? Or do you have to solder wires to the correct pins?
Basically how easy was it to wire up a temp sensor?

Thanks Retro. Just cut and crimp/solder a flying lead (I used some speaker cable) to the two most left hand wires off the back of the clock/temp connector. Run your flying lead into the engine bay and solder an outside temp sensor onto the end. Jobs a good un!. Will sort some pics whenn I have a mo.

Great stuff. Did you find the problem with your fans? ive just fitted a slimline and wondered if i could wire it the same as you have. problem is my fans didnt work too so i presume one of the wires around the relays are ruined.

Solder & heatshrink your flying lead to the brown and pink wires. Sensor wires soldered to the end of it and away you go!

1st off I checked the relays themselves are working. There are some good guides via google. Once you know relays are switching check the contacts on the connector down beside the rad.
If all ok then I used a crimp connector to bridge sockets 1 & 3 on the fan switch. This would cause your fans to come on if all ok, so a good way of checking them.

Still no go on my fans but with the switch now shorted I could check the voltages on the back of the relay box. Haynes manual was massivley helpful with this.

What I did find was little to no voltage at pins 3-4-5. These are where the relay is switched. By taking a 12v live from the battery I was able to replicate the switching wire carrying a voltage and the fans came on.

All reqd then was to run a fused live and soldwr it to the switching wire that operated the relay/fans.

Wire colour and numbers change depending on time of manufacture so best thing is to use a haynes and compare yout loom to the wiring diagram to confirm which is yours.

Take care with wiring though mate - nasty fires are the last thing anyone wants!

Troublesome front leckie windows removed & manual winders from rear doors put into front. Rear windows left in fixed position.. Central locking & window wiring removed.

Has been a while since last update. One or two bits on the car and a couple of bits being readied...

Purchased a 6 beam with lots of free rust. If anyone has a spare arb end plate I am in need of one...

Began stripping beam for de-rust & Kurust. Also received spax rsx's from Piggy....

Calipers stripped, re-greased, new seals where needed and a bit of paint.

After a bit of thinking I made a few changes to possibly improve air flow and intake by moving my heat shield around, inverting the intake for a greater RAM type effect and opened out the front grill as much as poss without it falling to bits...

ARB & torsion bars now removed, cleaned up and painted.

Working my way through beam parts, before re-placing bearings & rebuilding beam then hopefully fit the re-built and lowered beam, front 6 arb, rsx coilovers and upper strut brace all at the same time hopefully for some serious go-kart effect!

Rear window mechs fit in front? I know that front manual and front electric are interchangeable. Didnt know you could with the rears to front. Any issues doing so??

Good question. Not including standard servicing I reckon around £600 on upgrades & mods, £300 of which is not even on the car yet & about £100 odd on primers, paint, degreaser, & wd40 !
