Foobys' I'll fix your internet thread'
#1
Please post in here if you're having trouble with your internet and i'll do my best to advise if its normal / if there is anything you can do.

Please don't just post speedtest results, as they alone do not prove anything.

Please post your router stats as much as possible (As this gives me technical information about your line and errors etc)

If your having trouble getting your stats, just say, I'm not going to flame anyone who doesn't understand something they cant be expected to know. I'll guide you through how to get your stats.

The only thing is ask is you don't all PM me, as it will just fill my PM box up and it will make it harder for me to keep track of issues, so kindly keep them to this post.

Also please understand i dont live on this forum (honestly, i dont ) so if i dont reply, please just wait i will respond.

IMO you don't NEED over 30Mb/s unless you are running any kind of server

Ah well, at least it will still let me play on xbox live and browse internet lol. Take me about 10mins to load a 3min youtube video in standard quality. Theoretically virgins broadband should be a lot more stable with the migrate to QAM256, problems are already arising from daft things like loose connections though. Nightmare as most of our broadband faults the last couple of days are caused by crap rg59 cables and loose connections.

As for fibre, I'm pretty sure even the infinity stuff is HFC, so fibre from the headend to the regional node yes, but copper coax from there to your door, fibre optic broadband is all a LIE!

Plenty more where that came from Smile

ADSL is a piece of piss to work on, you're basically only using the A and B legs of a phone line right back to the MUX. Plugs are either connected or not, same with krone strips (or IDC's - insulation displacement connectors). Only real degradation you get is failing ADSL filters. With HFC and coax, a good connection is based on stinger length, quality and cross section of copper core, quality of braiding, how watertight the fitting is, quality of F connector used, all sorts. ADSL in that respect is either off or on, coax we have to maintain each and every connection in the house and network, and there's a lot of them.

As a service tech I only work on the connection from the pit (in SID architecture) or DP (in SBC architecture). From the tap, you have the drop cable to the house, external termination (omni) box, isolator, internal wiring, splitters, HDU's (unity gain splitters).. and each cable has an F connector that has to be fitted correctly. If ONE fitting is loose now, it causes freezing/blocky pictures with the TV and intermittent connection to the broadband due to the high upstream from the modem. If they peak over +55dBmV they effectively burn themselves out. Oh and if one tiny bit of aluminium braiding in the cable touches the stinger you get a total loss of service.

Oh, AND, the network should be fully closed, hence needing connectors done up tightly. We're monitored on network egress as the frequencies we use can interfere with emergency service and air traffic comms, so all open ended cables have to be terminated. But on the flip side, ingress from all these comms in the air can cause having with the SNR of the network by increasing the noise floor, which means modems and set top boxes can't lock on to the network and again, fucks up the service.

We had one guy this week who was taking out about 30 houses in his street as his internal wiring was done himself and was pumping noise into the network in his area. We traced it back to his drop cable, fitted a 50dB reverse path attenuator and boom, all the other houses came back online.

I could be here for days. Basically, it's a lot more complex from a service point of view than ADSL, but SO much more rewarding.

Very insightful post, thank you Smile

Downstream: 160 Kbps
Upstream: 448 Kbps

Noise margin (Down/Up): 12.9 dB / 11.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up): 66.5 dB / 31.5 dB
Output power (Down/Up): 14.4 dBm / 12.6 dBm

FML - 160k down is a bit of a pisstake, no - line is fecking unstable too, if I fart it'll drop out.

thats broken

But ADSL isnt really designed to work past 60db. nevermind 66.5

Your output power aint great and your Noise margin is way too high, somethings broke

That's my sync speed, you at least sync at about 2mbit...

BT HomeHub, haven't had a line check done, all of our phones are unplugged so we don't use the line/incur any bills, so I just need to plug in and get a line check done.

17070 and quiet line ftw...
