Changeing glow plugs on 106 nad/ Starting problems

Not an xud but close Wink lol

So my car is taking longer to start in a morning ive checked that its not air getting any more, so putting it down to the glow plugs.

Ive been reading horror story's were people have snapped them off in the head etc

SO has any one got any hints and tips so i dont end up with a massive headache with them??

I do that once, snapped them off, was a pita, ran on 3 cylinders for a little while lol. I did the ones on this nad when he engine was warm and didn't have any issues

Ok will do them when engine is up to tempture then.

Any other advice?? Any makes I should avoid?

My 106 NAD had one snapped off in the head.... Just left it and started it with foot on the floor every morning....

We've had two snap in a 106 nad at work for some reason, do them when hot as samass said, if they feel tight try working them back and forth slowly, put some copper grease on the new ones too Smile

Bosch are always a good shout. Ve had ngk in mine for a while with no faults

Replaced them was really easy, was nothing to worry about Big Grin see if it fixes my starting issue in the morning now

Still not fixed the starting issue takes about 30 seconds of turning over to go when it does go get a big cloud of white smoke soon as it fires (unburnt Fuel?) then it runs fine slight lumpy idle for first min but that's it,

Is it the Veg Oil causing it to take longer to start?

I've checked that no air is getting in and the primer gets hard after 1 squeeze

Any idea guys?

Is it only the first start? Are the plugs getting voltage?

Maybe a leaky injector letting fuel in overnight?

it be the oil.

use 5-10% diesel or petrol with it. a splash of 2stroke oil if using petrol and I bet it will improve

Ok well i just live with the longer starting time for now till it gets colder then i will mix it abit. Thanks for the advice Smile

It'll be the bad quality of fuel you're using.

Use normal white diesel, with 250ml of 2 stroke added to a tankful. That, coupled with a new battery means mine starts right on the button Smile

Since I'm running an S1 engine, should be ideal match for yours. Also, if you've a Lucas/CAV pump they hate non white pump diesel so that won't be helping at all. I'm sure I read something about the injection pressures, I think it's BS though, there's only 10BAR difference max between the Bosch and Lucas pump fitted to the TUD5.

Also, remember the glow plug warning light goes out when the glow plugs reach the minimum tempterature required to attempt starting. that doesn't mean a succesful start on these engines Tongue

got to admit, neither am I. but it depends on quality and how well it been filtered.

chuck in couple litres of diesel and if it improves.. theres the issue

@Martin I've got a 306 Bosch pump on it so should handle the Veg just fine,

I will try doing glow plugs twice see if that helps but with New plugs should be fine shouldn't it?

Never mind any way can live with it, just thinking if it's taking longer now it will take an age when it's alot colder Undecided

Will try it piggy gonna be putting derv in for dyno so see what it's like then.

I think your timing is probably a bit out, now that you mention you've got that bosch on your TUD. It's probably too retarded, try advancing it a bawhair.

If that is the case, it WILL take a very very long time to start in cold weather. Big Grin I would know by hearing it start from cold.

When it was on derv it started first turn of engine, it's only since I been on the Veg don't think there is a timing issue.
And the fact to advance or retard the pump is a right ball ache cos cambelt has to come off pulley off to get to bolt heads carnt be arsed with that! lol

Did the glow plugs twice and it started faster than normal. Still a bit of delay but I'm sure I can live with it.

Well, in my first reply I did say it'll be the poor fuel quality Tongue

At least you know the fix for that. i.e ulsd and a bit of 2 stroke.

It'll probably be unbearable below 0, mine was anyway. flattened the battery one morning, luckily I keep a spare on trickle charge in the shed.
