Helmet issue..
#1
just resprayed my helmet, like a twat I removed the sticker without realising there were regulations for track days, to be fair it was bought for go karting, but as I have two track days coming up I was looking to use them on these days...

Is it likely to get checked.. genuinely had the sticker there in the first place, feel like a numpty now.

If it is a problem, will replacing it with this suffice?

Listing not available.

Personally I'd just take a punt at it. If you get pulled up and can't use it, get a rented one from Combe. I bet you anything they wont check it though xx

I've never been asked at any trackday. I've even used my Downhill MTB helmet when the missus used mine on one event and wasn't questioned.

Should never paint a helmet unless you know what your doing!!

Certain paints cause a reaction in the materials used in the helmet which can significantly weaken them!!

That you may do, but is it the correct paint not to cause an integrity issue with the helmet!!

"petroleum solvents in particular can cause polystyrene to melt."

Don't think this one is petroleum based, also I'm spraying the plastic cover, not polysyrene.. I'll make sure everything is good when the paint is dry

cheers for the heads up

never ever put stickers or paint on a helmet...the surface is specially treated and any type of solvent or glue etc applied to the surface breaks down the protective surface of the helmet....The helmet is useless now pal. sorry

Edit:

I found one forum that said you shouldn't paint them because some aerosols break down polystyrene and/or the shell that is structurally integral to the helmet.. a bit.

But Its only certain types of aerosols, so I reckon it's just one of those brave pedantic online geniuses spreading rumours..

I wouldn't say it's a rumour!!

When I got my shoei bike helmet part of the instructions said not to apply any stickers or paint to the shell as it could effect the integrity of the shell!!

Personally I'd take the advice you have being given and look for a new helmet!!

Well said.

My helmet lives inside the helmet bag , which in turn is inside the orginal box kept on top of my wardrobe.

It gets cleaned with the proper cleaners after every use.

When its in use I never sit on it, avoid dropping it , if in using it at a track day I make sure in the way there and back its secure and can't roll / slide around as any impact on it and it should be sent back to the manufacturer to check its still ok to use.

Also make sure it's still in date, like harness and seats they have a use by date on them, granted they should still be up to the task after that date but if used for competition they will fail scruttenering .

Look after your helmet as it looks after your head!!

Helmet paint is a very specialist paint, it adds more strength to it. you should never paint it, you can add a film if you want to decorate it but that's it. You have now weakened it and I would never use it for anything.

You may be a professional sprayer but you still have a lot to learn about paints, helmet paint is very specialised only the helmet manufacturer can use.

That's not strictly true, yes it is specialised but there is a number of places in the uk who have the correct paints and know how to paint helmets, but they don't come cheap

What I meant was no joe blogs sprayer can use it due to being specialised and yes its not worth paying the price for, just buy one you like.

Bacteria builds up in the lining off the surface of your gloves.
And yes, you should never spray a helmet unless you're using solventless/low reactive paints, the solvent in most paints, and especially panel wipe used beforehand, softens the resin matrix of the shell.
