405 wont start

Hi guys

I know this is a 306 forum but someone may be able to help.
My dads 405 1.9dt wouldnt start for ages, kept pre heating the plugs and nothing. Yet when I put it in 1st and lifted the clutch it fired up. Im thinking glow plugs but just want to get your guys opinion.
Its got a bosch fuel pump if that helps.
When it did start at ran as usual just a bit of black smoke which was unburnt fuel.
Cleared after like 2 seconds.

Any help appreciated

Turns over fine looking at jenks guide im saying glowies. Cheers lads
