How much would i need to to a '6 manifold?

Also;

I am thinking of doing my whole system, but;
a) How would this hold up over time picking up shit from the road? Could it be a fire risk?
b) would there be dangerous heat spots on the ends of the boxes where I cannot wrap? I.e where the box meets the pipe?

Problem is, get oil on a bare manifold, it smokes and burns off almost straight away. get it on heat wrap, it soaks in, stays hot and eventually catches fire.

I wrapped my entire system on the estate as it was full of holes. Never had a problem with that. Also my GTI manifold and cat and that was fine

It's not the manifold I was questioning. The question was how would oil get onto te system, manifold -back. That would have to be a hell of a leak!
I'm fully aware of the risks of wrapping the manifold. Especially with this engines.

Personally wouldn't bother, the temperature the manifold will get to with the wrap on underneath is unbelievable, you put more heat load on the cylinder head, as the manifold acts like a massive heatsink.

Unless you've got _problems_ with underbonnet temperatures, I really would just leave it alone, apart from Rally situations and where people have mounted turbochargers etc in the engine bay, I've never seen it be of help, just contribute to cracking the absolute SHIT out of manifolds because they really aren't designed for the sort of temperatures you'll get with a wrapped mani.

The main logic behind my thinking is my concern of the water pipes near the mani. I have out a 6 exhaust mani on my xsi.

I suppose wrapping the water pipes would be a better option?

I have the '6 water pipes already and they touch if not held out of the way...

I'm thinking thermostat housing. Are they different XSI-GTi6?

Don't think so. Think the only difference is where the metal waterpipe at the back of the block runs.

If needs must, wrap the coolant pipes in heat wrap... It does things in both directions

The wrap should be sprayed with high temp silicone spray once it is fitted!!

This helps to stop water and oil getting in to the material

Yes, but no, there's another bit, on the Xsi block, its a plastic junction thingy, on th gti, its ally and a different shape. Now I just have to remember where I put it...
