Decent tools
#1
Well ive just bought my self an air compressor at last!

I dont need air tools and ive already got 3 bluepoint buzz guns and 2 air ratchets but i do need sockets! Ideally i would like snapon or something equally good but i cant justify the cost for the amount of use they would get. What can people recommend me? Looking at getting a fairly big set with both 3/8 and 1/2 or two sets.

Cheers

For impact socket I got Bergen set which I have had since I start as a mechanic that's about 4 years and not broke any and they get abused. You can get them off eBay for about £30 a set. As for any other sets I got some blue print sets off snap on which are pretty decent and a lot cheaper than actual snap on sockets

Yeah ive literally just stumbled across a bergen set for a half decent price.

Other thing is hose. I want one thats about 10-15 metres long as i want the compressor to be under my work bench and just pull the hose out to the car. Found a bergen 15 metre hose for £20 delivered. Anything i should be looking out for with these or is a hose basically just a hose lol?

I'd recommend you taking a trip to a branch of ScrewFix, I bought a Hilka socket set and some impact sockets...They're all still in perfect condition even though they've had a monkey hanging off of them etc and they come with a lifetime warranty on them. Think my socket set I paid £45 for and the impact sockets were about £30 I don't have the impact sockets anymore my best mate has them and he uses them daily and has never had a problem!

edit; thats with their proper impact sockets. Im not stupid enough to stick the chrome vanadium stuff in the gun.

Yeah but they have all the sizes you need bar 11mm 16mm and hubnuts and you can buy them all seperate and a longer rail for them.

hmm true.
MIght sound like a really stupid question but normal chrome vandium sockets will be fine to be used with air ratchets wont they?

Theyre odd the first time you use them........the kick takes your knuckles off. Dodgy They are real useful around the bay where you couldn't fit a gun though.

And Niall, I think you're supposed to use impact sockets with an air ratchet as well.

You can, but i have heard of the chrome cracking and shooting off and if it lands in your eye you need to go A&E :/

Don't forget to fit a moisture trap in the airline and oil the tools as required
