Decent tools - Niall - 28-12-2012

Well ive just bought my self an air compressor at last!

I dont need air tools and ive already got 3 bluepoint buzz guns and 2 air ratchets but i do need sockets! Ideally i would like snapon or something equally good but i cant justify the cost for the amount of use they would get. What can people recommend me? Looking at getting a fairly big set with both 3/8 and 1/2 or two sets.

Cheers

Ebay set? Been looking at a set of these as they arent much

Other than that maybe have alook at teng? might be pricier but its quality

RE: Decent tools - Toms306 - 28-12-2012

I got some clarke ones from machine mart to use with my impact gun...decent price and I haven't damamged any yet lol.

RE: Decent tools - cully - 28-12-2012

bought my gun and sockets from Aldi when they had air tools on special
air gun did the hubnut with ease

you might want to check your air plugs/sockets make sure they are full flow versions not restricted

RE: Decent tools - Matt - 28-12-2012

Curts ones are pretty good. For the life of me can't remember what make they are.

Useless post really haha

For impact socket I got Bergen set which I have had since I start as a mechanic that's about 4 years and not broke any and they get abused. You can get them off eBay for about £30 a set. As for any other sets I got some blue print sets off snap on which are pretty decent and a lot cheaper than actual snap on sockets

RE: Decent tools - Niall - 28-12-2012

Yeah ive literally just stumbled across a bergen set for a half decent price.

Other thing is hose. I want one thats about 10-15 metres long as i want the compressor to be under my work bench and just pull the hose out to the car. Found a bergen 15 metre hose for £20 delivered. Anything i should be looking out for with these or is a hose basically just a hose lol?

RE: Decent tools - weasle1uk - 28-12-2012

Have a look at Halfrauds Pro's. They come with lifetime warranty.

RE: Decent tools - ozonehostile - 28-12-2012

I swear by bahco, there stuff is near enough indestructable (so far) also the company that invented the adjustable wrench Smile

RE: Decent tools - InkedMuttley - 28-12-2012

I'd recommend you taking a trip to a branch of ScrewFix, I bought a Hilka socket set and some impact sockets...They're all still in perfect condition even though they've had a monkey hanging off of them etc and they come with a lifetime warranty on them. Think my socket set I paid £45 for and the impact sockets were about £30 I don't have the impact sockets anymore my best mate has them and he uses them daily and has never had a problem!

RE: Decent tools - Danny2009 - 28-12-2012

As above Halfords pro are good, spent £400 on tools there other week good quality and also lifetime gaurenteed

RE: Decent tools - Dum-Dum - 28-12-2012

I use halfords pro stuff with my impact gun and so far no issues

edit; thats with their proper impact sockets. Im not stupid enough to stick the chrome vanadium stuff in the gun.

TBH i didnt even realise halfords did sets of impact sockets. will look now Smile

Edit. The only do a small set of 1/2". Will keep trawling the net!

Yeah but they have all the sizes you need bar 11mm 16mm and hubnuts and you can buy them all seperate and a longer rail for them.

RE: Decent tools - Niall - 28-12-2012

hmm true.
MIght sound like a really stupid question but normal chrome vandium sockets will be fine to be used with air ratchets wont they?

RE: Decent tools - Ollie - 28-12-2012

Off topic but are air ratchets a good job?

for un-doing things yes, i wouldnt recommend doing up things like wheel nuts with air tools though

Theyre odd the first time you use them........the kick takes your knuckles off. Dodgy They are real useful around the bay where you couldn't fit a gun though.

And Niall, I think you're supposed to use impact sockets with an air ratchet as well.

You can, but i have heard of the chrome cracking and shooting off and if it lands in your eye you need to go A&E :/

RE: Decent tools - Niall - 28-12-2012

Fair enough i wont bother. Will just get a big set of impacts. Used to have loads of snap on ones but they all got nicked Sad

RE: Decent tools - Piggy - 28-12-2012

signet ftw

snapon for the overdraft

RE: Decent tools - Niall - 28-12-2012

I would love a snapon set. you really do notice the difference with their tools but my overdraft is already rather large lol

RE: Decent tools - swampy - 28-12-2012

Don't forget to fit a moisture trap in the airline and oil the tools as required

RE: Decent tools - Poodle - 28-12-2012

RE: Decent tools - Tom - 28-12-2012

RE: Decent tools - Piggy - 28-12-2012
