Ball joint size

How do I find out what size ball joint I need without taking my existing one off?

I have a choice of 16mm & 18mm and its for a 1.9TD

Most likely gunna be 16 mm, presume yours is phase two? But Peugeot being Peugeot, there is no definite way of knowing without taking them off. Always random it seems

Generally it will be as 306_xrdt said but there are random exceptions depending on what they had in the factory at the time.

My S reg parts bin special phase 2.5 GTi6 has 16mm...

I'd go for an 18mm tbh, if you try it and it doesn't fit then its a 16mm, if you buy a 16mm and its an 18 you might not notice until its ruined your hub!!!

No you will notice. They rattle around in there big time. Your a dick and shouldn't be working on cars if you don't notice! General rule is ph1, definitely 16mm, ph3, definitely 18mm, ph2....your guess is as good as mine!

I've had 2 cars come to me with the wrong size balljoint in them! Local parts places sell them the wrong size and they just put them in not knowing the difference!
That's fair enough if you've experienced it before but obviously the OP hasn't so trial and error is the best way!
What If the hubs have been swapped at some point? It's ok saying p1 16mm p3 18mm you can't be sure unless you know the cars history!

That's just part of buying parts for cars though. You never know if parts have been swapped for different ones before!

My s reg is a parts bin special phase 2.5 aswell lol

Think I'll go for the 18mm unless I can get it off in the morning and check it as it needs doing rather soon.
