tiny turbo. spools up almost instantly.

yeah first gear seems a bit short, but slam it into second and away you go.
i was pretty shocked by how well it pulls off the line.
im sure ginge will be along soon to input

As a couple of others have said i expect it was a 1.4.. they aren't too bad once they get moving and if you missed a gear then it's not suprising he caught you..

So can I...................... at 5k in second..................... but the clutch doesn't really care for antics like that too much, if you launch in first you need to change pretty much as soon as the car starts to move which is a PITA IMO lol

Well, I'm not a fan of clutch slip or wheel spin, so no lol. That might work in a stage 1 DT, but not with the amount of torque I'm sticking through a 132k clutch lol. Confused

Sounds like the guy can drive better than you Rowell lol. Tongue Tbf missing a gear will knock a couple of seconds off you, more than enough time for someone to catch up unless they're hopelessly outclassed.

You change your turbo for a bigger one and bemoan the lack of low-end torque and raised boost threshold..? Dude, seriously, are you backwards or just full of the brown stuff? lol

The dmf was already broken, why treat it gently, its not gonna fix itself..... Plus I don't often do grand prix starts, and I keep rolling up to roundabouts or lights (saves fuel if you don't come to a complete stop) so pulling away at idle in 2nd is fine. Never slipped the clutch like that.

With the turbo, yeah maybe I am a 'tard.....or maybe I trusted people too much saying 'its a vnt turbo they never lag'.....bollocks! I genuinely didn't realise it'd ruin ky car that much, I hope the actual 150tdis (where my turbo is from) aren't this shit to drive! Sad

Ah I see, that's not really "pulling away", but whatever. Smile

I didn't realise it was a VNT, haven't read your project thread. If you've got a lot of lag with a VNT I would guess it's probably your mapping that's at fault rather than the turbo itself. I mean, a bigger turbo will always induce some increase in lag (unless you've gone all out with carbon shaft, ceramic turbine, teflon seals, etc), but the difference really shouldn't be much on a VNT...

Also the colour of the magic tree makes a fair bit of difference. Blue ones give more top end power, yellow increase mid-range torque.

But yeh, as he said, smaller turbo, 'clean' inlet, decent tune so i've got very little bogging and it does well. First gear isnt THAT bad, it spins a fair bit on dry surfaces if you really chuck it down, as does 2nd... but once it picks, it's pretty fun Smile



Also, im with Ed, those black 106's really do shift

Tom, your GT1749VA is NOT laggy - it's the same unit on the 136HDis and they are NOT laggy in the slightest, I'm going to suggest that your actuator is set up wrong or the adaptation is completely to cock...

Did you adjust the stop screw or is it covered in warranty paint?

I've driven 150 TDis and they're exceptionally UNlaggy... My 2052V will be producing 10psi just of idle if you let it...

Miness a VB, the VA was the nice 130 one (that I broke), wish I'd kept to that instead now!

I didn't adgust anything, but being reconned I wouldn't be surprised if someone f*cked up putiing it back together. I really need to drive a 150 just to see what they're like, can't find any locally though, there were bloody hunderds when I was looking for a 130, sods law I suppose.

It wont even pull up hills in 6th anymore, 45mph in top gear and it just slows down even with my foot planted until I drop to 5th or even 4th if I want to shift! Means I can't even leave the cruise on without watching it all the bloody time. However I know it also lacks power now and then due to a dodgy brake light switch, so maybe its not 'all' the turbo's fault!

This has been covered before Tom: 6th is for motorway cruising. It doesn't matter how good your car is, planting it at 45 in 6th on a gradient will never yield positive results. Resist the urge to make this another thread about your golf and awful driving . Tongue

I've heard the red trees work like nos if you flick them as you pull away.

Erm, this golf and the previous one used to happily keep a constant speed uphill in 6th, obviously its not gonna pull away quick like that although it would slowly gain speed, but atm this one loses speed, and as a result the cruise drops out as the engine doesnt have enough power to keep it going. And as for 6th being motorway...lol, I spend all day in 6th from 35mph upwards.....
