Not at all. He had pretty much f*ck all rights as he's a new start. Unions will only help if you're a member of one and you can't join a union as soon as you start a job.
You can beg and plead about the job but they probably won't listen. Depends on the business though, my missus went into hospital second week of my job and the managers gave me two days off and delayed the training course.
