The feed pipe to the high pressure pump is in the filter top, the larger bore one on the right from memory, with the filter "leak off" being the smaller diameter one on the left, as viewed from the front of the car looking rearward. Fuel from the pump is the one down near the bottom on the right, the other two being to and from the fuel warmer in the/near the cooling system thermostat. Then the fuel is filtered with leak off back to the tank filtered also, but yes, point taken.
Since the "purged fuel" was gunna be sucked out I considered the purge to be ok to do, to make sure as best as possible under the time available that all/most of the crap sitting in the fuel lines from the tank ( cos thats where this stuff has come from ) was flushed thru and removed from the system.
Ideally its tank off and flush that, but its cold and cold and cold. A summer job that one but I will be removing the pump soon to check/clean the pump filter.......also the double relay connection block just in case thats where this slightly high pitched squeeek/hum noise is coming from. It seems related to the pump but is not coming from the pump, the one in the tank.
The squeeek happens when the ign is turned on, engine stationary, but goes when the pump in the tank shuts off, but does come back on when the engine is running, maybe its the diaphragm device just before the fuel filter??
Question is where the f did the rust come from, shell, or from some other fuel station??
Maybe a disposable ( placed in a bag after fueling and binned else it stinks the car out, i hate the small of diesel which is odd as i have a diesel car lol !! ) filter "sock" can be fitted into the tank neck when filling and then removed ??
